Price advise on price for a 1950's 4" 38 spl. M&P
My main collecting interest is 22 revolvers, so I need help. I have a chance to buy a blue 99% 1950's pre-model 10 (5 screw) 38 spl. 4" M&P serial range C152XXX with the original gold and blue picture box all numbers matching including the box which has the guns serial number in grease pen on the bottom of the box for $595. I have no idea. Is that too much? I have till Saturday to buy it, as it was put aside for me at my local gunshop. Thank you in advance.

Sounds high, It does have everything though. I would not pay that much, but I am tightwad. It is not a unique gun. You can still find some in the same condition. The way prices have gone the last year it could be an ok price. But I have seen faancier guns priced the same with the extras 19's 686-6 7 shot and a model 27. If you realy want it pay, if you don't make an respectible offer, good luck.

I just bought a 38 M&P in January of this year. Serial # 138xxx that was made in Dec. 1950. It came with the gold box and cleaning rod and looks like it was hardly used. It has a 6" barrel and all the numbers match including the box.
I paid $550, which I thought was about $50-75 too high, but they were firm on the price and I personally don't see many M&Ps in that good of shape from that time period, so it came home with me.

In my neck of the woods that is not outrageous (I'm in coastal Oregon). It's not a give away but it sounds extremely nice with all the goodies. If you really want it go for it, if you paid a bit too much now it won't be long and it is worth that and more.

Its an almost 60 year old gun in its original box, its in high condition, and while they made alot of this model most haven't stood the test of time. Its in the money at that price and will only appreciate over the years if it is kept in its current condition. Go for it. -Chad

I don't think the price is that much out of line. If they won't haggle on the price, offer the $595 out the door.

At the last gun show I passed two deals to a buddy of mine. One was a 98% S prefix gun for $385 no box and the other was a pre war in 98%+ for $300 had a tag price of $400 but the guy was hungry. No boxes, etc. but very good deals...they are out there if you look. I think $495 is more in line but that's just mu $.02

I agree with Curtis as I like M&P revolvers but that just seems to high to me. I would think if one looked hard that in this market you could find one for $350 to $400 in excellent condition because they made a bunch of them.

Hi,
In California where gun prices are high the revolver you describe is going to run from $475 to $525 with original box and papers. A shooter is around $325 to $400. I would offer less money or pass. I agree with other members that while a M&P 38 is a classic they are not rare. I have bought and sold some M&P in good condition and never paid over $300 or sold for more the $350.
Good luck, and let us know if you do make a deal.
Regards,
roaddog28

Thanks to all of you. I contacted the dealer and asked if there was any wiggle room in the price, and was told no, price is firm. I thanked the dealer for contacting me about the gun, and for putting aside for me, and told him that I will pass on it.
