Victory advice requested. Backstrap photo added
Here are a couple pictures of a Victory I am considering (my first). S/N V 664833. Grips are original to the gun. I would rate the finish as between 75-85%. Original .38 S&W caliber. Back strap is stamped HE-B. It would be about $500 OTD.
Any opinions will be appreciated.
Tony

Man, that sounds high. There's one in a pawnshop down the street in similar condition for $249 - ****** Jay Scott grips but a decent enough gun.

Tony, $500 sould pretty high for that gun, considering the condition. However, I don't know how smart the seller may be. It is a rare version of a Victory model, as the backstrap mark "HE-B" is an Israeli Police mark. At some time in it's past it found it's way to Iisrael, was isued to the Police and then later became surplus property and was imported to the US by a gun dealer, prior to the gun control act that required the dealer to add an import stamping. Most of these police guns were surplus Israeli military guns, however, from what I can see in the right side photo, there is no military ownership stamp on the frame. That stamp would be a small Star of David and a Hebrew letter stamp designating the particular military inspector that appeoved the gun for military issue. If the seller is not advertising the gun as a Police issued gun, then he probably does not know what the HE-B means and he has priced the gun way too high for it's value as a .38 Victory Model. Having said all the above, I can't be absolutely sure the HE-B mark is what I say it is, without a picture of the backstrap. It's not impossible the gun was one of the guns issued to the German civilan police during the WW2 aftermath in the British & American zones of occupation, and a particular German police unit used an HE-B type stamp. Can you post a picture of the back strap? Ed #15

Back strap photo
Ed, Here is the back strap photo. Not as clear as I would like. Went back & looked at the gun again. The only other stamping was the letter P on all the numbered parts.

Very interesting piece. Think probably issued to German police from British stock on hand, appears in remarkably good original finish.

The HE-B stamping is interesting. My Victory has a HE-M stamping which I was told could possibly stand for Hesse Municipal police. Perhaps yours was for the border police? When the CMP received the Bavarian carbines recently, one was noted having the HE-M stamp on the recoil plate. There was a prior thread discussing this and it seems there are still a lot to learn about these things.

Tony, The HE-B stamp you photoed is not similar to the HE-B stamps on the two specimens of Israeli used Victory Models I have in my collection, so now I'm inclined to go along with the West German post WW2 Police possibility. Ed.

Passing on this gun at this price
My thanks for your help. I am going to pass on this particular gun at this price. If they come down at least $150 I may reconsider it.
As so many others have said; the information and opinions on this forum are priceless. Thanks again.

I know US prices are lower than those in Australia for these guns, but 500 for an unusual piece like that in Australia would be snapped-up quick smart.
