Victory model - stocks question
Looking for some information as to when, based on serial number, S&W switched to the plain walnut stocks in the pre-Victory and Victory production run. I realize it is likely to be approximate.
Thanks.

The excellent book by Pate, "U.S. Handguns of World War II", says the change occurred in February 1942. In the book SN 889789 is pictured with smooth stocks and shipped in mid-January 1942, but no mention of the stocks being original. Charlie Flick (ordnanceguy) is building a Victory database here on the Forum and may know. Hope this is helpful.

Nobody knows. Starting about the mid 950,000 serial numbers , you begin to see the smooth walnut grips appear on some guns, mostly the British shipped guns, however the checkered stocks are mixed in. After about 980,000, or so, you seldon see original checkered grips, and after V 1 , they are all smooth wood grips. Ed

Thanks for the info. That's specific enough for me. (Looking at one in the 990,000 range with smooth stocks, so that fits.)

If the grips are original in that 990,000 range gun, the back side of the right grip panel will have the same serial number as the gun. The change that Pate ws referring to in his book, as Feb 1942, is when the enginering order was given at the S&W plant to make the smooth stocks, and there is always a phase in time when both types of situations, before and after, a change order is given that you will see a mix of the product. RangeRover,
I hope yours has the original grips. My Lend-Lease Pre-Victory somehow got fitted with a set of actual Victory grips (V prefix to serial number on inside of grip). I do wonder where my originals wandered off to.
