Victory w/ground serial Number/now taken down
on AA Revolvers For Sale -- Item# 9666810. Talked to the Shop today and looked the gun over. I'm suprised it's still listed.
Glad to see they took this auction down.

It looks to me by the number under the barrel that it's serial number V257.

Yes but the ATF requires it to be unmolested on the frame

I saw that Victory too, but with the numbers removed from the butt, you would be asking for trouble buying it, or even listing it for that matter. Too bad, it sure is an early gun.

Too bad about the frame numbers being ground off. Nice looking revolver otherwise.
I have a copy of a BATF letter somewhere that someone else inquired about the status of a firearm w/a removed ser#. They simply gave it the term contraband and said it was to be surrendered.,,,,,ouch..

There was/is a 27 5" Listed on one of the sites for $375. I called the folks, the frame SN and numbers on the crane were ground off. Some one stamped the side of the frame with numbers. The gun shop is aware and is still going to sell it.

the numbers on the left side are what they think is the SN, no letter with it from the FEDS authorizing a restamp. I spoke with a Shop owner who does many transfers and also holds large auctions on antique guns. He said gun shops are to turn these in. He said he would not take one and something about dealing with the BATF that can make life miserable for folks who possess a weapon with a ground off SN.

so how do you report something like this, or is it best to just ignore it.

Why on earth would you want to report it?????
I understand the seller is going to withdraw the gun from the auction

I was on the fence about this one, I spoke with the folks. I told them I was not interested due to potential legal issues after finding out about the SN. I did not see how $375 was worth their license. I would think policing ourselves might be the better act in the long run. Those who fail to do the correct or legal thing and will not listen will doom themselves. It boils down to you can't fix stupid nor explain eating habits to a greedy hog.

Hi:
In the 1950-1960s a Firearms Company, "Southern Gun Distributors" located in Miami, Florida re-chambered, re-finished, and butchered tons of Smith and Wesson Victory Models for re-sale. The serial numbers were taken off along with the layard rings. After the layard ring holes were filled in, the serial numbers were re-stamped. Anyone with an old "Shotgun News" from this era can read the full page ads from "Shotgun News". These "Jewels" sold for $29.95.
I would amagine that occasionally one of these "Jewels" will turn up. Most were nickeled/chrome plated with plastic stag grips added.

I've always thought that a good rule to follow is that if you
are not involved in a transaction: MYOB!

All you can do is point it out and then MYOB.
I believe the old saying is "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

Auction Ended by Auction Arms staff, Seller reports items being confiscated by ATF, All bids removed and auction ended
It's really a shame that a 3-digit serial number Victory has this fate. I got exceited when I first saw it then realized something was amiss. Still looking for that 3-digit model!
