K 11153 is Dec 1947 gun for me

I recently picked up a very comfortable shooting revolver with a light trigger in 38 spec. It looks like it could be a K-22 but I am not finding enough info to tell and not familiar with S&W. It has Ser no 712706, model no. 47563. Can anyone tell me about it? Thanks

K10171 is a December 23. 1947, according to my letter.

OK, first welcome to the forum. Secondly, when you have a question that does not involve the original posters question, it is considered bad form to add your question to an ongoing thread. In addition, folks that have already read or participated in the thread may not read your question and your results will suffer. As Jack pointed out this is referred to as "thread hijacking".

Now that we have all of that out on the table, if your gun shoots the .38 special round, it would then be called a K 38 and not a K 22. The K is the frame size and the 22 or 38 refers to the caliber.

The serial number will appear on the butt of the gun (may require that the stocks be removed) and you need to include the "K" when giving the serial number. The 47563 number that you most likely found on the frame and the yoke are assembly numbers and are only used during construction of the gun in the factory to keep fitted and mated parts together.

If your serial number from the butt of the gun is in fact 712706 or in reality K 712706, then the gun should have shipped in the later part of 1966.

Not a problem as that is how we learn. Since there is no K your gun is a .38 Military and Police model 1905 4th change made between 1915 and 1942. Based on the serial number I would say 1940 or 1941. Post war these guns will have an S prefix until 1948 when the C prefix started and ran to about 1967 when the D prefix began. These guns became the Model 10 around 1957 and were probably the most produced S&W of all time and used by almost every major police force in the world.

Dick - I am too lazy to go look, but was the information in SCSW3 manufacturing dates or ship dates?? Anyway, K9XXX, K15XXX, and K17XXX shipped in early 1948.

I have been doing a ship date correlation for models, but have not gotten up to the K frames yet. What I see is, in general, we make too much of random shipping of S&Ws. There are many early models that have near perfect shipping/sn correlation, others that can be reliably dated to within 2 years, and only a few to date that have little to no correlation.

Examples like 32 DA, 32 Safety, Model 1 1/2 & Model 2 Tip-ups have near perfect ship date/sn correlation, while the 38 DA, 38 SA, 44 DA, NM3 have little correlation. Post-war K frame Masterpiece revolvers are in near perfect ship date order for their production from 1946 to 1970, probably due the the market demand being near the capacity of the factory to produce this model during all these years.

There is also a likelihood that the early and late years of production for many models show the most abnormalities, where the model was either just gaining popularity or was losing sales due to a replacement model introduction.

Without a factory letter, about the best that can be said about dating is that yours was shipped sometime during 1941. There is little correlation between SN and shipping dates at that time. S&W was just getting cranked up for massive wartime production in 1940-41, and things were confused then. Does yours have adjustable target sights? That would be highly unlikely for that time. I suspect yours, if chambered in .38 Special, is simply a Military and Police (M&P) model.

My K265XXX was manufactured in 1956??? The marking on the barrel is the same as the butt of the weapon. Can anyone tell me about the numbers on the yoke? On top are the letters KO, under that are the numbers 24817 and under that it's the number 7. Thx

Trying to help a friend identify and value his collection which includes a K-22 serial number-85K71234.
Have not seen the K-22 but he says in very good condition.
Thoughts on year of production, which 17 dash model and range of value would be appreciated.

I can't help you with value without good clear pic's. The serial# dates to about 1980 and the revolver in question will be a Model 17-4.

jwebster86, welcome to the forum. You would be better served if you started a new thread and asked your question. This thread is years old and has so many responses that many folks will not bother to open it and read your question on a fourth page. In a new thread your question will be first.

I own a k-22 that is about 5000 serial numbers lower than yours and mine shipped in June of 1950 whereas I shipped in September of 1950.

I would therefore guesstimate your gun shipping in maybe August or September.

Whew...six years ago I started this thread, on the hunt for a K-22. I can now, finally, say the hunt has concluded. Examples have not been thick on the ground around here. I've seen a few beyond my budget and understanding of current prices, and did miss a couple - by that much.

Only have seller's photos for now, but here she is. Serial # K 2992##. Not mint, but then I won't mind taking her to the range. Reading through the thread here, would seem to indicate 1958-ish?





She becomes my fourth S&W, in my fourth calibre; .22, .38 S&W, .38 Spcl and .455. Can't wait until she shows up.

Does that mean we can close this thread now? ;-)

& just above 38111 the umber 4 is clearly stamped

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place but I have a k-22 and was hoping to get it dated. But I'm trying not to take off the grips. It has two other numbers stamped into it that says "k 17507" and another that reads " E

It was my great uncle's and now mine. Based on family history, I would surmise it was his service revolver in the 1930's.

How do I check the date of manufacturer?

Your K225xxx would have been in the 1954 neighborhood if it were a Model 14,15,16,17,18,19,48,53,66,67 and 68 (or the pre-model versions) but not if it is a Model 10. It would not have a K prefix if it is a Model 10.

Does it have a fixed sight (a grove cut into the rear of the top strap?

To the original poster, I am interested in K22 from 1947 thru the mid 60's. I generalize by using round numbers like:

numbering started in 1947 K101 (ok a handful shipped in 1946, but I will never see them)

by 1950 they had hit 100k
1955 250k
1960 400k

I did say in general and the rounding thing. But it is a handy guide
