I recently received a revolver from my grandpa but have no information about it.

I included a photo. Its a six shot .38 Special CTG Hand Ejector. Serial Number is 266XXX, there are no serial number letters on the grip, but under the barrel has a "B" in front of the 2 on the serial number. It has a 6" barrel. Fixed Sights. It's a 5 screw gun.

Just looking for information on the gun.

Your gun is a .38 M&P. Collectors refer to it as a .38 M&P Model of 1905 4th Change. SN 241704 was manufactured in 1915, so yours not long after that. The B before the SN under the barrel indicates your gun left the factory with blue finish.

An M&P built sometime between 1914 and 1920; grips look correct for the timeframe. Assume you mean there is no SN on the grip panel, hopefully there is one on the butt of the frame. The SN on the grip would have been in pencil at that time, I think, and might still be there but very hard to see. Sometimes looking at the grip on an angle in bright light, sunlight or flashlight, and sometimes with magnification the pencil lead numbers can still be seen. I was looking for the SN on a 2nd Model .455 MKII the other day that I had noted had no SN on the grip but checked again in bright light and could just barely make out three of the numbers in the five digit SN. It seems to be in pretty good shape although I can't tell if it has been refinished although it may well have been. Value isn't high in the market but since it came from your Grandpa it is priceless. Wish I had one like it from my Grandpa. And welcome to the Forum, hope we see you here often.

Welcome to the S&W Forum.

You have a .38 Military & Police model from about 1916. The B on the barrel flat simply means it left the factory with a blue finish. The B is not part of the serial number, which is why it does not appear on the butt.

The stocks appear to be original. The serial number would have been written on the inside of the right panel with a pencil. It may no longer be legible, but it might show up if you shine a bright flashlight on it at an oblique angle.

Nice older revolver.

Added: Jeff got in just before me! Quickdraw Jeff.

Sorry, just noticed you are a new member - Welcome!

Best guess on when it left the factory is 1917. The gun is a 38 Military & Police, 4th Change. Agree that it has been refinished with the following clues below.
