Are these the elusive large medallion stocks?
I just picked up a smith with these stocks which number to the gun....are these what I think they are?
Must have been a LEO gun since right side is so worn

Those are the 1910-1920 Service stocks with 1/2" gold plated recessed medallions. They look like K frame; made in large volumes in K and N size.
To know if they are the elusive ones ordered on 2/11/1929 to 3/18/29 we'll need a serial #.

The other elusive large 1/2" medallions are the flat, flush mounted chrome medallion K stocks c. 1930 and serial numbers in the 61X,XXX range only because they were soon reduced in size to the smaller 3/8” size due to wood breakage on the Service stocks.

I believe that these are the elusive gold plated stocks from 1929. They came on a Commercial 1917 that I bought at auction. The right stock is stamped with serial number of revolver 184505.
I have been told that they might be worth the price I paid for the refinished Model 1917.
Hope so!!

Tom,
That's a very nice 1917. Do you have a ship date?
The medallions look silver and flat, not recessed.
If the gold is worn off, (but I've never seen it worn off that completely w/o some vestiges of gold in the corners and grooves), they could be the flat gold plated flush mounted from 3/18/29 to April 1929.
But most likely the standard chrome plated flush mounted when changed again by order April 1929 and used thru WWII.
I'm having trouble getting #184505 from the grip; I see 103XXX or 183XXX. Can you post another photo, a close up with the grip on its side?
The satin finish appears to be a re-finish. It's much too nice for the condition of the hammer, trigger, and stocks.

Now that's a K frame 38 M&P Model of 1905 - 4th Change from 1915-16 with the standard recessed gold medallions proper for that period.

Thanks! And extra thanks for narrowing down the year. I hate it when you look on the standard catalog and see 1915-1942...that’s a big spread... not that I’ll separate them since the number to it, but what are the stocks worth (obviously they would need a resto )...just curious

yes it is definitely been refinished. Knew that when I bought at local auction. Mechanically it is excellent - almost like a previous owner had it restored. The consignor at the auction said he bought it that way. The medallions are definitely gold colored and flush. Yes the stamping on the right grip is hard to make out. I definitely can make out the last three which appear to be 505 which would match the set# of gun. I paid less than $400 for it as only one other bidder was bidding. The refinish may have kept bidders away as well as it was near end of auctiom.. Will try to get close up pics for you.

They'd probably be worth no more than what it cost you to restore them. But as is, around $100.

Here are some pictures. Best close up I can do with I-Phone. I haven't had the 1917 letter so shipping date per S&W unknown.
The grips have been somewhat of a mystery as to whther they are the elusive 1929 ones so any help with solving is appreciated.

Can you guys give us others a hint at what is so elusive and special, as it doesn't seem obvious unless I read it and have missed it. It seems they could be gold or they could have been very easy to break so they were quickly changed, but why are they rare and elusive?

They were gold plated, large and flush mounted and only in use for one month in 1929 before they were changed to silver color. My understanding is the change after 1 month was due to plating not holding up.

I've seen this before; the grips were re-finished and as usual the finish covered the medallions. It's either wiped off or quickly wears off the surface of the meds. What's left in the recesses yellows w/age.
Comparing that yellowed background with true gold plated meds in this thread, reveals that it is not remnants of gold plating. They’re just flat chrome plated meds from the 1930s and also helps date the Com’l 1917 to the same period.
