Default 1946 .38-44 HD

In a previous post, forum members were very helpful with some questions I had about my S&W HD.Several members asked for a photo, but I was unsure how to do it as I'm new to computers.Well,I succeeded in downloading a photo from my cellphone's camera into my computer, and if I've attached it correctly, here it is.If unsuccessful,I'll try again.

Very nice old Heavy Duty! Yours looks to be in pretty good shape for it's age. I think the style of these guns is aesthetically near perfect. My 4" HDs are getting shot a lot of late. Using commercial 158 grain +P ammo in one of these N frames is like shooting a .22, ... fun!

The grips on yours are from a later period. Yours would have worn "high-horn", diamond magnas when it shipped. They're around if you're interested and keep your eyes open.

Thanks for the post & picture,

Jerry

Post a WTB ad here on the forum with the serial number or close approximation and you may find someone with some diamond stocks for sale. Be prepared to dig a little deep as diamond stocks are getting pricey.

Great looking HD! Most of the early ones were 4" barrels and yours is one of the early 5". Does it have patent and address info on the top of the barrel? If you can't find any High Horned grips, Keith Brown can make you a nice pair for it.
Thanks for posting,
Bill

Default '46 HD patent & address info

I've had my HD for many years and never noticed, but yes, it does have the patent & address info on the top of the barrel. It reads; top line- "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA" bottom line-"PATENTED FEB 6 06 SEPT 14 09 DEC 29 14".Also,thanks to you & the other forum members for the grip advice.
Steve

It was in the S68000 range that the barrels for the new ejector rod came out and the barrel markings were deleted. My theory is that they used the pre war barrels they had until they were used up.
