For those who like .22RF cal. N frames, there were 10 Triple locks made in .22RF cal. by S&W with 10 round cylinders. ( See "American Rifleman, Nov. 1953 ) The pictured gun in the Rifleman is a service sighted gun, that appears to have 8 chambers in the cylinder however in conversations with Carl Hellstrom at the time, he noted a special order for 10 target models. They had a drift rear sight and he surmised that they were probably intended for the Bisley matches in England where adjustable rear sights were not permitted in their matches. Also see a followup letter in the Dec. 1988 American Rifleman., p. 14. Question for Pre-WW2 N frame collectors: How many different calibers were manufactured by S&W for Pre-WW2 N frames, both steel & alloy ? ( I have a list of 14 cals.) Ed.

Hey, Ed,
I'd be interested in such a list. Can you scan and post the AR article? The chance of running across a Rifleman from '53 is about zero.

delcrossv, It's not an article, it's letter to the editors, with photo of the gun. I don't have the equipment to copy & scan, etc., but I think the American Rifleman magazines are downloadable for the NRA, I've been told. Ed

You can almost always find back issues of TAR on ebay. There are several Nov '53 issues up for auction now.

I think about this revolver...laying on a closet shelf or in a cardboard box in the garage...and the current owner absolutely clueless as to what it is and more importantly what it's worth.

There was a family in upstate NY a few years ago that had a painting grandpa brought back from a business trip to Italy. It hung on the living room wall for 40 or 50 years. After the old man passed, they took it an auction house with art appraisers on staff to ID it. Turned out to be an unknown Michelangelo with an estimated auction value of $250,000,000. It was unknown in that pencil sketches existed, but nobody knew if he ever did the painting. He did and it wound up in NY. BTW the family donated it to an Italian museum saying it never should have left Italy.

The 22 RM isn't quite worth that much, but it would fetch a boatload of money. Someday somebody will walk into a gun shop with it and want to sell it. If the shop owner knows what's what he'll offer $500 for it, wait a few months then send it to a big auction house. If the shop owner is unknowing, he'll buy it for $500 and sell it for $1,000. Eventually somebody will get it who knows what it is or finds out before selling.

Whoever is fortunate enough to find this gem, I would put a down payment on it but not conclude the sale until I had a certified authenticity verification from S&W.

That would depend on whether the price was $800 or $80,000.

I’ve always liked to think that if there is an afterlife, there is a small room with bare blank white walls and nothing but a comfortable chair in the middle of the room.

When one reaches the afterlife, they take a seat in this comfortable chair and projected on the walls are images of everything that the person ever wondered about; where did I lose my car keys on that road-trip in 1989? Where did my wife’s cat disappear to? Where was that .22 caliber RM I was chasing? And the answer is projected on to walls and Ed is sitting there going “Damn, I was –this-close to looking in that place!”

I communicated with Ed Cornett a number of times way back when. Always a pleasure to talk to. Hope he’s where the bluing is always %100, the cylinders have no turn lines and the stocks are always factory ivory or minty Cokes.

I know that the first 13 on this list were made IF the 9mm and 30 Carbine guns count as "Pre-War" since they were built during WW II. The first 11 are positively Pre-War calibers.

1. 44 Spec
2. 45 S&W Spec (45 Frankford)
3. 45 Colt
4. 450 Eley
5. 44/40
6. 22 LR
7. 38/40
8. 44 Russ
9. 455
10. 38 Spec
11. 357
12. 9mm (during WW II)
13. 30 Carbine (during WW II)
14. 38 S&W ??
15. 32/44 Target ??
16. 38/44 Target ??
17. 320 Rev Rifle ??

Default .22 Triple Lock

I hope one (or more) of these confirmed rarities were returned to the good ol' USA after the Wembley Matches....if they stayed in the "Mother Country"....they probably ended up in a blast furnace. Pip-pip....ho-ho !!

Mr. John D. Hammer and his wife, Betty B. were very knowledgeable gun collectors. They lived in Tampa and they were very involved with the Florida Gun Collectors Assn., which was based in St. Pete and I believe it ceased to exist years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammer passed away about 20 years ago. They had one daughter, Melissa Riddlesworth, who lived in Lutz (Tampa) and a couple of grandchildren. I don't know anything about them The Hammer's gun collection could still be with the family, but more than likely, it was sold as part of the estate; so, that revolver is probably in someone's collection--possibly here, in Florida :-)

I worked for IMC Global in the phosphate mines in Central Florida. At one time, IMC owned the trona plant. Here is an article on the subject:

Chemical Plant | Trona on the Web

P.S. I don't have those revolvers :-)))

As soon as I find it you’re all more than welcome to come over and shoot it. You will have to provide your own ammo though.

That is why it came to memory easily. Too many campfires, with too many old-timers and those of us who want to get to be one.

Let's speculate a bit. Assume the .22 LR Reg Mag was found today and it is still NIB with all the goodies, how much would it bring at auction.

Let me know when you figure it out, and I'll check my sofa cushions.

So, if I want the ultimate pair of RM's, I guess I need the one in 22LR and No. 1 presented to J. Edgar himself......

This reminds me of Colt model 1873 revolver serial #1 that was found in New Hampshire in the 1920's belonging to a widow of a US Cavalry soldier.

I believe they said it was found in the barn, IIRC.

Thanks to all of you for an excellent thread. This is one of those firearms that could very well fall into the area I like to refer to as the "sock drawer" classic. I imagine it sitting in some old sock drawer, where it has sat for decades, probably loaded...just in case. A friend of mine carried his FFL license back when for $150 just about anybody could. He was on a supposed rotating list with the local Goodwill organization. According to him if Goodwill was called out to a house for a general pick-up, they often were assigned removing everything from the house, or room in some cases. One rule was they could not handle any firearms or ammunition. If they came across any firearms, ammunition they would call who was next on the list and that person had X-amount of time to get there or the next was called, etc. Most of the stuff he got called on were "stinkers", old shotguns, wall hangers, etc. But ever now and then he got a pearl some of which were in his two complete Model 70 Winchester collections, pre-war and pre-64.
We talked about my "sock drawer" theory and according to him that was where many handguns were found, usually top drawer. Back in the day people did not necessarily lock their houses but they did lock their chest of drawers, most family items of value were kept in those chests.
Another friend of mine has a wife that runs a well-established antique business. She often buys the entire estate, then along with my buddy has to remove the contents that did not sell during the estate sale. He talked about a chest of drawers he and his wife moved from an upper bedroom down the stairs and into their van. He told he heard something moving in one of the drawers, sliding and rattling around. Got down to the van, decided to take a look and found a $10 gold piece. Neat stuff is still out there waiting to be found.

Of the horror.
Knowing the times in which we all now live, something like this could be a definite possibility!🤬 That almost makes me want to cry!!

The two guns were identical: 8 3/8-inch barrel, King Reflector Red Post front sight, King #112 white outline rear sight, and Magna stocks. Registration number 1590 was in .357 Magnum caliber and Registration number 1591 was in .22 Long Rifle caliber (S&W charged $150 for this revolver, or 2.5 times the normal retail cost of this model).

The letter to S&W states..."The price is immaterial as these pistols are intended as a gift for which a subscription has been made,...". (not exactly sure what a subscription means in this context, but it doesn't really matter).

Many have tried, but no one has succeeded in finding either revolver. Happy Hunting!!!

Thanks for sharing this information, Bill. I wish that the grips had been something more special, like a pair of Roper’s. If that had been the case, a grip collector might stumble upon the gun by complete accident. Also, we’ve all read about how expensive the normal Registered Magnum was for the time period, so one that was 2.5 times more expensive obviously had to be going to someone very wealthy or powerful or both.

As bad as it is to say, and hopefully I am completely wrong, but this sounds like something that happens everyday nowadays. A less than reputable family member (aka crackhead) raids the house of a recently deceased relative and basically “steals” from the estate, selling it off for whatever they can get. I wonder if Ed had shared the name of the AmPot executive, that owned the gun and whose daughter remembers shooting it, with anyone else? If not, it is a-shame that that particular clue ended. It seems like it was the best lead so far. Unfortunately, he also said that the lady was elderly, and that was 12 years ago, so she may have passed taking that clue with her.
