I am looking at a KCPD magnum on gunbroker, auction # 170052047. Can you folks who are knowledgable on these take a look and PM me what you think? Thanks.

Aaron that RM has been on GB for some time. The highest bid I think was around 1800.00 and did not meet reserve. I think that would be around the high side for one in that condition. Just my opinion of course ;-)

Thanks LC. I have always wanted a KCPD gun to fill the "registered magnum" role (or hole) in my collection, but I will be very patient.

Right now I am trying to learn everything I can. I want to make sure I know for sure what I'm buying, i.e. what parts to look for, whether things match, etc.

Thumbs up KCPD RM

Here's my take...

1. It has been reblued, or at least some of the parts have been reblued. If you look at the ejector rod and rear sight, you can see that the bluing has started to turn plum.

2. Has well worn post war magnas.

3. One of the higher registration numbers I have seen.

4. Lots of wear on the gun and the right side of the trigger looks to have some rust or discoloring on the CCH. The most of the color case hardening has been removed or has worn off of the humpback hammer.

5. All of the numbers that are photographed appear to match.

6. Over priced. It has been on my watch list since it first came on GB and most serious RM enthusiasts have lost interest.

Even with all of the above, it is a cool specimen and if priced right, I would gladly welcome it into my safe...

My $0.02

The gun is overpriced for the condition, even including the badge. It has been on the auction site for a while now and I believe the highest it ever went was 1850.00, and that’s not even close to the seller’s reserve. If you want to get into registered magnums a KCPD gun is a good choice. They are the easiest and cheapest way to start collecting pre-war .357 S&Ws. Nearly all of them have been re-blued at some point. Most were used hard and/or heavily modified and prices are much lower than more pristine pre war guns. This one for sale does appear to have all the original parts (except grips), but unless the owner comes down off his price (a lot) I would just keep looking. A better and more fairly priced example is bound to come your way…
