Registered Magnum Magazine Article
There is a pretty good article in the current (june, 2010) issue of Handloader Magazine. It is titled "S&W .357 Registered Magnum" by Brian Pearce. I am sure alot of you guys already know the info in it, but for us newbies, it offers some good history on the model.

Ya beat me to it. I was going to read the article and report it here as well.
Also...he has a short dissertation in his "byline" page in the front of the magazine about reloads and self defense.

Hello boykinlp
It sure was a Nice article and well worth the purchase of the magazine ! I learned from reading it that There was an In depth article in The November 1935 American Rifleman on the then Brand new .357 Magnum offering by Elmer Keith as well, being just one month prior to my Registered magnum shipping out of the factory It sparked my Interest. I by luck found a mint Vintage example on Flea-Bay and it is being shipped as I type this response. All I need to Locate now, is the Outdoor Life issue where Douglas Wesson wrote his article on the amazing Registered Magnum back in 1935 to put the whole package together...

Guess I need to get a copy.
The landmark article was written by Roy Back in 1989 and published in the SWCA journal that year. He then republished it in the 1990 G&A Handguns annual. They really are almost the same, but there are/were differences. Since then every so often a writer comes along and writes up an abbreviated version. Its a shame none of them include any new material.
Of course if you just go back and read this part of the forum over the available years, you'll probably get a better education than any of the new articles. And I'm going to suggest blastphemy here. Print the darn articles and threads and put them in a binder! Yes, just do it. This forum does have the annoying habit of sometimes losing great threads. Its been a function of us not having enough space or maybe a technical blip. I've also printed and filed articles on Roper and Kearsarge grips. I can find them now when I want to re-read something.

It won't happen again.
Before the move from Groupee, going above 250,000 posts cost me an extra $400 per month.
So, I pruned.
We will NEVER prune data again.
In addition, we now purchase the capability of perpetual backup so data and other precious things like Post Count can never be lost.

Hammerdown,
Isn't it great when you find a new piece to "YOUR" puzzle. We all have our own puzzles, individual to each of us, and nothing is better that completing one. Hopefully you will find the Outdoor Life piece. Good luck.

I solved the lost thread problem by saving to my hard disk ever thread I am even remotely interested in.
Like this one.
In internet explorer hit and hold alt then f a s
This allows you to save the thread and then sort them. I now have over 10 gigs of threads stored. When I am working overseas where I cannot hit the forums I sort out the old threads on my disk so I can find things.
It is an amazingly useful way of stockpiling data and being able to access it.

The summer issue of the S&WCA Journal has an outstanding article on the origin of the Registered Magnum and cartridge by S&W historian Roy Jinks. I recommend it to all.
Oh, I forgot! Not everyone is a member!
Neener, neener (good naturedly, of course).

Why be good natured about it? They should spring for the few bucks and join up.

But dontcha' have to be "sponsored" or something to join? I don't personally know anyone who belongs to SWCA, and living in Kalifornia, hardly know anyone that even owns guns, let alone S&W's!

Hello boykinlp
I paid Fur it, but I am still awaiting it. Typical Flea-Bay seller charged $4.00 to ship it, then sent it Media Mail by Pack Mule for probably 69 Cents actual shipping Cost....

How does accuracy of a RM compare to a p&r 27 with the same ammo.
Hammer- I do have some NRA loading manuals from 1950-51. In them are some articles written by Keath - Sharpe - Ed White of HP White Labs. They give pressure and velocities of 357mag loads measured by lab. Really interesting reading

Hello
Come down to Knoxville, & I would let you shoot my Registered Magnum ! I sure would love to get a copy of those articles written by Elmer Keith, Phil Sharpe and Ed White if you would care to copy them I sure would like to have them. Heck deliver them in person and we could go straight to the range to shoot my Registered Magnum if you would like to? It shoots every bit as good as my Pre-27 from 1955 with a 3-1/2" tube, but the Pre-War sights make it a real challenge to get Precise adjustments compared to the newer Micro-Click style ones my Pre-27 as the Registered Magnum sights are super touchy when moving them.. Hello BT:
There are a couple of ways to join the S&WCA, and sponsorship by an existing member is just one way to do it. It is not a 'secret society' and new members are welcomed all the time. There are plenty of California members in the Association. The Summer 2010 issue of the S&WCA Journal lists 40 new members, many of whom I suspect first became aware of the Association by being members of this Forum. If you have a strong interest in Smith & Wesson products, you should be a member of the Association.
Follow this link for more information on joining the S&WCA: Information about the SWCA
If you need further info feel free to email me at [email protected] (and remove the NOSPAM) and I will get you the info you need to become a member of the S&WCA. (The offer is also made to anyone else who would like membership information as well.)
The Annual Meeting of the S&WCA is less than a month away and will take place in Tucson, AZ this year. Highly recommended.
