Default RM out of closet....take a look!

Owned this peice for 30 years. Never have got a letter from Roy, but will.

Received last S&W journal volume 44 no.2 and peaked my interest on this gun. 3 1/2 inch barrell, cloverleaf engraving, nice gun.

Enjoy the pic's, do you guys think that this is origional nickel? I ask because there is an "N" stamped on the right side under the grip. Questions and comments appreaciated.

That looks righteous to me, not that I claim any experience or special knowledge when it comes to RMs. Nice revolver. Congratulations.

I don't know anything about that cloverleaf engraving. Was that something the factory offered? Or is it an external addition to the gun?

very cool, looks like its wearing a pair of later model K frame Magnas on it though. Keith Brown will make you a nice pair of correct looking grips if you care to have them. I think my last pair was under 3 bills, though you will have to come up with the medallions. Iam sure it wouldnt be too hard to find them, I have some but I think I will need them soon.

Sweet pistola!

Since you didn't answer the earlier question I'll play the bad guy and bring it up again. What the heck is "cloverleaf engraving"? For the life of me I can't see any engraving on that gun.

Dave, look at the 5th photo and you'll see an engraved 4-leaf clover right next to the trademark emblem on the sideplate.

If I'm reading the registration number right then it did ship from the factory as a nickel plated gun.

Hey guys, did you notice there's a 4-leif clover engraved on the side plate of that thing?

Thanks -db-. My aging eyes looked right over that image.

Thumbs up

My guess is that it shipped as a nickle gun. That "N" under the grip frame is usually a give away... Also there is no "B" stamped in the ejector rod housing, which typically identified the gun as a blued gun.

Thanks for sharing. Those 3.5" RMs are some of my favorites!

I don’t wish to start an argument or rain on anyone’s parade, but if you look at the last photo in the second set it appears as if the ejector star (?) is nickel plated. I thought that this was one of the signs of a non-factory refinished gun?

Refinished or not, that is still a great looking R.M.

Hello OlSeabee
Nice R.M. you have there. Nickel R.M's are Scarse compared to Blued ones. Oddly, you gun has the Patridge front sight blade. Being that it is a 1937 Gun The Baughman sight blade was in use by then as Famed FBI Man Frank Baughman sent ina drawing of his sight blade that S&W Offered in Mid to late 1937 time span and I suspect most with a 3-1/2" Barrel Length gun's would have been equipped with the Baughman sight blade, after that time span. I Myself Prefer the Patridge sight blade over the Baughman style sight blade and my 1935 R.M. Has the Patridge style like your's does. The Original owner of mine had written S&W and asked what sight blade they would suggest on his 3-1/2" Barrel and his respose from the Factory was a Patridge sight blade, Funny how thing's change over time. Here is what the correct Magna's will Look like for your gun there are factory issued... Hammerdown

Hi
You have a very rare Registered Mag per Roy jinks Article it is one of only 10 made.
There were 8 barrel lengths made in Nickel. 3 1/2 10 made, 4 29 made, 4 1/2 8 made
5 77 made, 5 1/2 6 made, 6 1/2 5 made, 8 3/4 3 made.
these numbers mite be a little low because Roy mite have found a couple more in the
records. don't let any one talk you out of it for a cheap price, it is worth more to a collector than a 98% blued gun.
just my take on this rare gun.

Anyone willing to hazard a guess on the value, or is it one of those "sky's the limit" sort of things?

That is a very nice old shooting iron and is an original nickle gun. I would guess that its worth a minimum of $500.

Since we are showing letters about the .357 magnum, I will try to attach one from my collection.

Didn't see any nickel or 3 1/2" RMs there, do you figure as much as 100% premium? Again, just curious.......

You can expect anything. But, the condition of your Reg. Mag. isn't up to the premiums, IMO.

Would it be possible to post a less tiny version?

Condition is not, but rarity is more relevant in this scenario. I'd be interested to see what this gun would bring through GunBroker or DCarroll. I predict it would be a lot.

Of course. These RMs always bring "a lot." To use a very precise valuation.

Can you borrow a better cell phone and post more pics?

Just kidding, but it would be fun to see some better pics and some closeups.
I can't really decide if the finish is the original nickel or not.
A VERY interesting gun.
I could not have owned it long without finding out WHERE it shipped!

I think he meant "a lot" as in a small plot of land, perhaps in Manhattan??

Now you guys need to stop getting my Pops a riled up here! Gonna give him a coronary!

I sent in for the Jinks letter last week for the RM, and i promise we will take some better photos tomorrow night for ya. Should be up before the weekend.

Did dad mention that we shot this gun a few months back?.......oh yea....quite nice. Its got the longest hammer pull i have ever felt. Trigger is very nice. Quality is amazing, the cylinder is like a top when you spin it....it just keeps going and going.

Thanks, Hammer, but I already knew that.
Seeing the N on the gripframe, checking Roy's article, and having seen that Jim and Kevin had also checked it pretty well clued me in.

What I said was that I did not know if that was the ORIGINAL nickel-

Why did you say 'kinda'?

JUST kidding! They're better than we had.
I think that is likely wearing its original nickel. I can't see any solid indicator of a refinish.

What a lot of people don't know is that the nickel Reg Mags were polished heavier. That is sorta true for all nickel guns, but it definitely shows on nickel Reg Mags!

Another tidbit for you guys-
Between about 37 and 40, you will encounter some guns that were leaned on pretty hard in the buffing room. You will see some screw holes that begin to dish ever so slightly- always on the bottom side.
I don't know if he was a new guy, a part time fill-in, or an old guy whose ability and/or health might have been fading. Over the years, I've seen a good number of these guns, and I believe the same guy did 'em all.

Glad you came to NE Ohio bunch. You had a crowd around your gun and it was one of the main topics. The trigger pull was awesome. This gun and all the rarer guns that have come thru the bunch is why I started the group. It was a pleasant day and it was good to have met you. Larry
