Engraved 44 Magnum/Target Ivories
This 44 Magnum was custom-engraved by Russ Smith in 1960 and kept in the factory collection until being sold in September 1965. It has serial number S196691 and was part of S&W's display in Washington, D. C. It does not have a model number stamped in the yoke cut because guns to be engraved were often sent to the Engraving Department before all the stampings were completed during manufacture.
The 44 Magnum was shipped originally with smooth target stocks made of rosewood (I have them), but I thought these target ivories from the sixties would look good on the revolver so I switched stocks.

That's a real piece of art. As I grow older I find myself appreciating the engraved guns more and more. I have 2 now (nothing like this one) and would like more.

I did not know that. Learn something new everyday around here.

I'd say something complimentary but I'm too busy wiping the drool off my keyboard.

The complexity of the engraving is nicely counterbalanced by the pristine simplicity of the ivory.
Superb!

Hi Bill:
Great S&W! I especially like ivory grips on engraved blued guns! (is that the non-identical twin?)

Bill,
That's a great looking gun. Russ Smith is my favorite modern S&W engraver. The full coverage engraving is beautiful.

Bill,
Any idea who did the ivory grips? They look great. As usual, the gun is amazing too.

Russell Smith did not scratch on guns for pawn shops. That is what quality engraving looks like!
Thanks for sharing.

Doc, Once again you have amazed me. That is Beautiful.
I like your choice of the Ivories also. They really set off the
rich blueing. Keep on representing for us in Hoosier Land.

Bill, that is a beautiful 44 Magnum. The ivory grips are a great contrast to the deep blue finish. Thank you for sharing it with us.
