The following two pictures show a side-plate logo on a 1917 .38 M&P .





I find the size of this logo interesting. Notice that it is a little bit shy
of 0.500" wide. And notice that the 'Trade' and 'Mark' on the top and
bottom of the circle do not have a box around them.

From 1899 to 1910, and perhaps later, the side-to-side measurement
is at least 1/8" larger - at least. And the 'Trade' and 'Mark' are boxed
in. Thanks to DWFAN, here is a 1902 1st-change 32-20 :



At some point later, early 1920's, there appears to be a somewhat
smaller logo - as in this picture :



And then, several years later, we encounter very small logo's,
measuring about 5/16" side to side, and also with no boxing around
the 'Trade' and 'Mark' . This occurs in the early 1930's, but may be
earlier than that.

Finally, just to make things interesting, DWFAN has a post-WW2 pre-28 example:

What's interesting to note is that the one you posted from 1917 seems to have some depth to the S&W letters where the others, and mine shown below do not have this depth.

This M&P is from '49 and has a logo with the boxed in trademark. It measures 5/8" in diameter:



This 1896 which also shipped in '96 has the exact same logo and is the exact same size. The only difference is that the scrollwork within the logo is a little bit fancier on this older one:

I hadn't noticed that, but now that you mention it, it appears that the
'legs' of the "W" are deep-rolled ; not just the edges of each leg, but
the entire width of each leg. I can get the owner of this gun to
confirm that.

Yes, the wide legs of the "W" are depressed their entire width on the 1917 M&P pictured at the beginning of the thread, as is the stylized center portion of the "S", and the diamonds at 3 and 9 o'clock.

Here is a very good picture of the small ( probably smallest ) logo,

This is measuring 21/64" , just a tad more than my rough measure
of 5/16" . Richard thinks, and I agree, that the Lot 57 picture earlier
is also this small logo.

The legs of the "W" are fully deep-rolled on these small logos. I
examined some 1899 and 1902 logo, and only the edges of the
"W" are rolled; the rest of the leg is the same surface as the side
plate itself.

Clearly, these side-plate logos underwent several changes.
