Smile Model 1917 Revolvers

Hi:
Did the U.S. Government issue/use any ammo but FMJ .45acp in 1/2 moon clips for the Colt and Smith and Wesson Model 1917 Revolvers?
I know several Federal Agencies issue the Model 1917s after WWI but was wondering about the issue ammo.
Thanks,
Jimmy

Default 1917

i don't think there was any other ammo issued for the 1917. they came out with the 45 auto rimmed cartridge for the 1917 surplus guns that were sold on the surplus market.

This may be off topic a little...

During the '20s and '30s, the US government gave out firearms to banks in an attempt to combat the notorious bank robbing gangs of the era. IIRC, in addition to Model of 1917 handguns, other weapons, up to and including BARs (!!!!!) were handed out. Most bank tellers at the time were men, and they were expected to use firearms to interdict any attempt at robbery. Imagine our government doing that today!

I don't know if appropriate ammunition was distributed along with the weapons, but I would assume that there was nothing to prevent the civilian users from purchasing anything they believed would be most effective. On the other hand, if you worked for the Post Office or some other federal agency, I assume you would have been restricted to using whatever you were issued. Officially, anyways...
