terry,

The picture looks like your "new" 1917 doesn't have the much dreaded lock. Is that true and does it only apply to that particular "dash" model?

Dave

PS: Found the answer to my own question. It is a pre-lock.

Bought this 1917 a year ago. According to the proof marks (the crossed flags, I am told), this either went to the British or Canadian military under Lend Lease. I'm guessing that this was initially chambered for the .455 MkII round and later converted for .45ACP.

The new barrel is a .45 Colt CTG and the gun shoots .45 ACP nicely.

I am currently looking into converting this into .45 Colt. It's not clear to me if I can simply have the cylinder reamed or if I must find a new cylinder/crane.

It's certainly an ugly duckling, but it's a lovely little ugly duckling.

Dingotech,

Have you removed the grips yet? Is this revolver stamped "U.S. ARMY MODEL 1917" on the butt?

You have a M25-5 barrel and what appears to be a Wondersight for a rear sight. If your cylinder currently chambers .45 ACP, you will have to find a .455 cylinder and have it rechambered to .45 Colt. That will be expensive to have it fitted correctly.

If I were you, I'd stick with what you have. Also, a rechambered cylinder will be kinda short for some .45 Colt reloads.

Thank you for the input. Much appreciated. I was discussing this earlier with my smith and he voiced similar concerns regarding the cylinder and trying to re-chamber the gun.

There aren't any US gov. markings on the frame. The butt has the serial number: 47XXX. The lanyard loop thingy was ground off.

Just removed the grips and I can add the following. Covered by the upper portion of the left grip scale is an interesting stamp, or set of stamps- from a distance it looks like Japanese characters, but they're not.

At the bottom is the number "11", above that, a small "E", and above that is what appears to be a "U6" and yet above that is what seems to be an " '3 " that is perpendicularly arranged relative to the other characters and, finally, well above everything else is a winged-like symbol.

I'm not certain that I can take a good picture of this, but that ring any bells?

Purists, shield your eyes:

I bought this refinished 1917 as a shooter, but when I put a few cylinders-full downrange with the service stocks I found it so unpleasant I put it back in the safe and pretty much forgot about it.

A couple of weeks ago I came across some Pachmayr grippers of the right size for very little dough. I put them on and what a difference they made. I got some Rimz full moon clips and now its a regular shooter. Its dead on with 230 grain factory ball.

Dingotech,

Your revolver started life as a .455 Mark II Hand Ejector 2nd Model and was built for the British or Canadians in WW I. It was obviously rechambered to .45 ACP, which was much easier to find in the US. Avoid shooting the hotter +P .45 ACP ammo in your old gun.

Enjoy.

Default New Here

More more more. Come on guys dig those pictures out, cant get enough of a good thing. New here, I am, looking forward to learning and maybe teaching a few things. I didnt know these guns had such a following. Glad to see it. I own both a S&W 1917 and a Colt 1917 and enjoy shooting both of them. I dont own anything I cant shoot. Most of the guns I own have started out a gunsmithing projects. I paid 125.oo for the Colt and the Smith has a good story behind it. Im afraid I havent learned how to post pictures yet,but I will. Also both gun are stripped of their finish at this time. Im doing a little make over on them at present. So when I post you might not drull over them, but you will(If you are a shooter)

Here's a pic of mine. I bought it back in 1989 when I had an FFL. Paid 130 for it at that time. I had a new barrel installed a few months ago, and this is a pic I shot on the first trip to the range afterwards. It still shoots quite a bit low, but these are pretty light target loads too. The point of aim here is right about where the front sight is. My plan is to next look into rebluing and then a set of stag grips.

OK, this may be blasphemy, but I think the 1917 would be a cool looking gun with a 4" barrel. I'd like nothing better than to find a trasher 1917 with a bulged barrel that I could shorten. Does anybody have pics of one?

My Smith has a 3 1/2 inch barrel. I didnt cut it, got it that way many years ago when no one was collecting them. Yes it does look good. As soon as i figure out how to post pictures I will. Sometimes looking at some of these old guns that have been altered, I think there should be a collectors classifcation for these fine old guns. The probem with that is to many of them are still in use doing just what they were designed to do. I have a question, does anyone here know what size the bore is on a S&W chambered for the .45 Colt. I know that Colt used .454 in their New Service and SAA before WW2 and .452 in their 1917 and the SAA since WW2 I am new to the S&W. The 1917 S&W and 1917 Colt are all .452 as is the 1911 Colt and because of the .45 A.C.P. used in these guns. I hand load my ammo and this is very useful information to me.

Gen. Colt,

I have a 2nd Model HE in .45 Colt that shipped from the factory in 1917. The muzzle measures .452.

Here is mine number 568XX. She is a US model and shoots Auto rim or full moons just fine. If it wasn't for a scratch on the left side plate, she'd be 90% or better.

Ah,, White Coyote. Had breakfast today with Barney at the Mayberry . Yep thats what mine looks like, only I still retain the hammer and full guard, and someone thought mine would look better chromed. Still cant post a picture. Truth to tell I just got mine rockin and rollin with in the last month. I didnt care much for this gun all way around, but mosty it had a trigger pull that required the use of a come-a-long. I replaced the rebound spring in this revolver(The one it had came from the front of an F-150) and now I know what Skeeter Skelton, Elmer Keith and that batch of writers so long ago raved about when writing about the prewar hand ejectors, I like this gun. She's a slick nickel now. Oh White Coyote looks as if we reside in the same area. Sometimes I shoot at the firing line in Canton. By the way is your grip frame been rounded, mine has, shorten too a bit

You people have inspired me to take some pictures of my U.S. Army Model 1917s. In the first picture the one on top is SN 910xx. It looks to be unfired and would be 100% except for some moisture damage to the barrel and sight due to poor storage. On the bottom is my shooter,SN 359xx.

[

Here is a view of the other side but with SN 359xx on top and SN 910xx on the bottom.

[I

For a comparison, here is SN 910xx pictured with my Colt Model 1917, SN 2096xx.

Thanks Bettis1 for the info. Sorry I didnt thank you sooner but I got distracted by picture of a nice gun. Im getting that way again, BRush, it just not fair. Two really, two Smiths in that good of condition, and you can throw in 1917 Colt to boot. If I didnt have two 1917 Colts and 1 Smith, well I'd be down right jealous. Bought mine over 35 years ago. Mine have been working guns for as long as Ive had them. I dont think I have 400$ tied up in all three.

Here is my odd ball 1917 Commercial chambered in .45 Colt Ctg. instead of .45 acp. The barrel was replaced with a 6 1/2" barrel. All the serial numbers match barrel, cylinder, ejector star and grips. This was no hack job done on a .455 revolver. It shoots pretty well...at least better than me.

This brazilian has been posted on a different thread or two in the past by it's previous owner but I recently purchased it and thought I'd show it off with it's new faux ivory grips. It shoots good, has a great trigger, and is really in decent overall shape.

Default Reworked 17

my reworked 1917 is a low number 1917 22xx that has been refinished, adjustable sights, modified to short action.

would like to know who did the work.

Here's my 1917 Commercial...
It went to Wolf and Klar in 1926.

Ok, I'll play too. Most of my 1917's have been posted before and my new Brazilian hasn't had her photo shoot yet, but here you go:

Here is my $300 gun show find (Dec 2009)

I have heard that the older guns get the weaker their steel gets and you shouldn't shoot a WWI gun like a 1917. I have been shooting commercial reloads through it (230 grain lead) and Walmart bulk ammo.

Oh you guys are KILLING me! Great pics. I have wanted a 1917 for some time. I might have a line on one, haven't seen it yet. They are asking $425, it's a re-blue with incorrect grips (unknown kind). S/N 12158. What do you think? High? Low? any idea when it was made? I really want a shooter before I go for the higher grades.

Keep the pics coming!!!

That was $300 well spent and well worth it. I'd give anything to have my first Smith & Wesson Model 1917 back. It was a lower grade gun but solid and complete. It shot a treat and used to ride on my hip for hikes and hunting. I have to baby the one I have now.

"I have heard that the older guns get the weaker their steel gets and you shouldn't shoot a WWI gun like a 1917."

Yeah, I've heard that too. I wouldn't have many guns to shoot if it were so. Never ever heard or observed any evidence to support it. Something else that the internet rumor mill gave rise to, I suspect.

No, the guns age fine. The older the owners get the weaker their minds get.

Default Old Steel

Im a gunsmith, Im a machinist, and I am an engineer with alot of experience, with metals. Some steels do weaken with age as most everything does. When it comes to shooting a gun, if there is any question about whether to shoot it or not, have a gunsmith look it over. As for the strength of these revolvers, they are built like anvils, in a day when people still used anvils. Though I wouldnt put them through my revolver all the time, I have and do shoot p+ through mine.No ill effects. 45Wheelgun: you sure do look like Moses? Your 17 is a mighty fine piece of work. Im going to make me a set of grips shaped just like your's I do like them. The barrel, is it a model 25 barrel? I have been thinking of doing this barrel change to my 17. Other than those two things, my 17 is almost the same as yours I retained the hammer spur, and No engraving on mine. I rounded the butt of mine too, makes it look like a Chief on steroids. I call it my pocket howziter.

That is a sleeved M28 barrel. At least I think it is. It is tapered so it isn't a M25 barrel. You can see better pictures along with some closeups in this album:

Were any of the S&W 1917's arsenal reworked like the Colts? I have never seen one with the military-applied parkerized finish, My 1917 has turned plum, and the finish is thinned - probably a result of poor storage or heavy civilian use.

I don't know about Parkerizing, but on mine, you can see a hint of it on the cylinder, just below the indent, a bit of the bluing that is left, on the other side by the muzzle there are a few flecks of bluing left. My feeling is that somehow the finish wore or was worn or cleaned off. THat is what caught my eye at first that it looked like a parkerized surface, but it is pretty much bare metal that has aged. I have a Colt 1917 that exibits much the same finish.

Yes, many were Parkerized as part of the reconditioning process in the WWII era. This article should answer many of your questions:

Mine is not as pretty as some of them in this thread but they are hard to come by here in Australia. This one had been a wall hanger in our local Army barracks.

I quite like the look of an old warhorse

I picked up one of the 1917's that was sent to Brazil in the 1930's and then brought back to this country. The Brazilian crest is kind of a neat touch. I have it for my house gun because I figure seeing all those big holes will bring activities to a stop in a big hurry. Plus it would be hard for the news media to scream about a homeowner having an 80 year old gun.

Default Need help in Identifying .45

This .45 has no s/n. It is a family possession and I have little other info. Another member suggested it matches a 1917 but may have had the grips replaced. I appreciate any info.

Jumbo,

Your revolver should have a serial number stamped on the base of the grip frame that you can see between the two grips. There are other places that the number can be found but the one on the butt is the official one.

If it has been removed, the gun is illegal under Federal law. Unfortunately, in years past, some people removed the serial numbers and US Property markings from these revolvers in the mistaken opinion that it would make them OK to own. Actually it has the exact opposite effect.

I have a 1917 revolver in 45 auto rim. It's in nice shape with the us army designation and loop for the lanyard. My problem is that along the years someone chrome plated it. Can the chrome plating be removed and then reblued to original or should I just leave it as is?

Yes, it can, but unless it is an extremely special revolver (Black Jack Pershing's personal gun, for example), you won't get your money back out of it. You would be better off selling it and buying one in in original condition. If you only want a shooter, just shoot it the way it is.

PS: It will also fire .45 ACP ammo, with or without third, half, or full moon clps.

I'll just leave it as is since my mother gave it to me after my dad passed away. He was an old horse trader so I imagine he traded something for it.

how did i miss this thread all these months.
heres mine bottom left corner. lanyard has been plugged and its reblued. got it for $200 a year or 3 back, so i couldnt pass the deal. shoots good with ball and standard velocity hollowpoints. i put the grips on that i found on fleabay. i must say these grips are not conducive to good shooting and like P220 says, pachys or hogues make it more fun to shoot but not nice to look at. it fullfills my indiana jones fantasy... if i ever luck into a beater brazillian i will cut it down and bob it. anybody shot 45AR thru theirs ? buffalo bore makes a serious 45AR round.

Here's mine, along with one of those "others" and a 1903 Springfield, all from 1918.

Wish I had the lanyard loop for it, but hey, the gun was free--and a good shooter.
