Was this pre 27 barrel shortened?
I came across this pre 27 for sale. I've wanted one, or a RM, or a NRM, or even a model 27 for that matter for a long time. However, there are many out there and I want to get one that's right. This one looks ok to me, except I am concerned about the barrel. I remember reading something about the pins on the front sight but I cant remember specifically. I'm suspicious of this gun but the pics provided are not the best either. The guy is asking $900, but it does have a pair of cokes.
My 2 questions:
Is the barrel most likely shortened?
If original length, is this a buy? (I'm on the fence)

IMHO the barrel has been shortened from a 4" gun and had the front sight set back. It is not rare you see exposed pins on a blue gun as early as that, but fairly uncommon. Most of the time it is usually only found on nickel guns. If you factor in the Cokes, if decent, they would bring around $400 leaving you a $500 shooter which I think is still too much. If that gun was $600-650 I'd buy it but not any more.

29 aholic beat me to it. Those front sights pins have been R&R. I dug out my lettered 3.5" pre 27 (S109xxx) and compared it to the pics. The front sight itself looks more "rounded" and not as tall as mine plus I think the "S&W..357 Magnum" on the right side of the barrel is a bit too close to the muzzle.
$650 tops in my book. I think the cokes are worth more than the gun IMHO.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the answers guys. It appears as though the search will go on for my N frame 357. I think I will offer the guy $600 shipped and see what he says. He will probably laugh at me BUT I'm sure with a $900 ask, he doesn't know that the barrel was shortened.

I would buy that gun at $650. The stocks will sell for $400 all by themselves. Picture that gun pantless at $250. Would you buy it?
It looks cut to me due to the lettering being so far forward.

He may well know (or strongly suspect) that the barrel was shortened. He probably feels like it isn't his job to point out all the possible shortcomings of his revolver. He's waiting for someone who will buy without looking too close or thinking too much.

For comparison, here is a Lettered Pre-27. The sight pins are visible, and the rollmark is fairly centered.
