I have this old S&W box that is marked Smith and Wesson the "357" Magnum revolver and wonder if it is correct for a Registered magnum. Or is just for the pre model 27? there is no serial number penciled on it anywhere that I can find although it may have been once written on the small label like thing on the bottom. No evidence of any writing remains that I can see

Pre-War 357 Box

Yes. That is the box that they shipped RM's and pre war 357's in. There were a few post war 357's also shipped in that type of box. Some photos of a box, with the gun...

Gazz,

If you are interested in selling that box, I would like a chance at it.

Thanks,
Bob

yes, the numbers would have been on the little white tag on the bottom.....there is a chance you may, under a good light, magnifier, whatever and there are a few 'tricks' to be able to resurrect what may have been marked on it...nice box

What is the length of this box? I believe that they came in at least two lengths: one for the 8-3/4-inch barrel and one for the rest. It is possible that there was a third length for the shorter (say, 4-inch and less) barrel lengths. Maybe someone could enlighten me here.

Bottom line: I'd like to be in line as a buyer if the box accomodates the 8-3/4-inch barrel.

tftech1,

They came in 3 sizes, this one appears to be the medium sized box. I have never seen the short one other than pictures. have owned a few of the long ones and a few this size.

Box for 8.75"er

Bottom line: I'd like to be in line as a buyer if the box accommodates the 8-3/4-inch barrel.

Sorry, but for the 8.75" tubes, you need the long box like the one in my photo above...

And - like Dan, I own several of the long and medium size boxes, but other than in photos, I have never seen one of the short ones. Just to go on the record, I would love to have a short one if anyone has an extra lying around.

Thanks,

There are also two variations of the box. One showing a picture of the gun without a grip adapter and one showing a gun with a grip adapter.

Where did you find/aquire this RM box? good find, cheers Dale in Canada

Thanks for all your comments. The box measures 13" long so it would not work for the 8.375" barrel revolvers.
I cannot remember exactly where I got it from but suspect it came from a gun dealer in Lynn, MA who is no longer with us. He had been dealing out of his house (with a proper license) and the ATF came knocking to shut him down. Since he was rather old and in poor health, they let him continue until he passed. I bought a bunch of old gun stuff from him and wish I had bought more.

Gazz, Two years ago sold a gun to a out of area buyer, he decided to drive down and pick it up it, he called when he got to town but I was running late at work, told him to find something to do, I would see him in a hour. Met up with him, did our deal, then he pulled out a red box similar to yours, just paid $20 for it at the local antique store where he went to kill some time, asked me if it was worth anything, told him I thought maybe $500. He about fell over, he sold it a couple week later on flea bay for $492. I now stop in that store once a week. But still no S&W boxes.

It's pretty clear that if you had a pile of those boxes, you would be well on your way to being a wealthy man! Too many in front of me, but I have a Registered Magnum (circa 1935) that is crying for a box. If there is a box out there looking for a home, I'm at [email protected].

Thanks!
