Default If a revolver was returned to S&W for engraving...

Would there be a rework stamp/date on it? Would the logo be moved from the right to the left?

I don't know the exact answers to your questions, but I can offer
some comments. The rework stamp/date was done by the service
department. I don't know if the engravers were considered part of
the service department, and I don't know if the gun would have
gone through the service department.

As to the logo being moved from the sideplate to the other side,
I presume that would require replacing the side-plate, and also
roll-marking, or stamping, another logo on the left side of the frame.
I don't know for a fact, but I doubt they would do that. Replacing
a side-plate is not trivial.

Regards, Mike Priwer

Here's the situation. An acquaintance has a Model 18 (or 18-1 shipped 1961) that is nicely engraved. Logo is on the left under the cylinder release. Box is missing. Roy's letter says it was not engraved when shipped but he thinks it looks factory so was maybe returned for work. There are no rework marks on it. I would think that any gun returned for work would be stamped but I don't know and that's why I asked.

I was thinking that with the logo on the left it's likely original engraving. But Roy says no (based on records). So where are we? Could the records be wrong?

Maybe this was one of those guns that was carried to engraving by an employee and was getting special treatment for a good customer or VIP and the records don't show the engraving? Went to Camfor.

I'm going to be very careful here lest I arouse the ire of the forum gods like i did the last time I made reference to a current online auction.

This gun is currently listed on Gunbroker by seller nunn. Closes pretty soon.

Wouldn't they strike a re-work stamp on it even if only for the necessary rebluing it would need after engraving?

I have owned a couple of guns returned to S&W for engraving. There were no rework marks on the guns. In a couple of the cases, the logo on the side plate was engraved over and there was no logo on the gun. In another case, the logo was engraved (not roll marked) on the left side of the frame and the logo on the side plate was engraved over. I also saw one where the engraving on the side plate did not cover the logo. Just about anything goes.
