Default Rebated Grip Frame-Correction & Apology

Correction and Apology. The picture below is not a Regulation Police, but a 22/32 Hand Ejector, or HFT and NOT my Regulation Police. I've never owned a RP Target, though I would like to. i had this picture mixed in with pictures of my .32 RP and got it mixed up in my head. I should have noticed the tag at the bottom of the pic that clearly says 22 32. It's embarrassing because I have damaged my creditability. I own and have owned many nice guns but that one came right out of left field. Sorry about that.

For purely educational purposes, I thought I would post a picture of my old .32 Regulation Police grip frame.

Thank you, that indicates you have an very interesting gun. I find all the I or Imp I frame 32's are excellent shooters.

Yes, to accommodate the factory patented round butt-to-square conversion stocks.

Began in 1917 and used on the .32 and .38 Regulation Police Model I frames until the Model of 1953, and the .22/32 Heavy frame Target in the early 1920s.

Replaced by the true sq grip frame with sq Magna stocks on the Models of 1953 New I frames; same size as the J frame .38 Chiefs Special Baby Chiefs and Mod of 1953 Chiefs:

I have a 35-1 with stocks that look like those but without the notched back strap. That is the upper portion of the rear grip frame is exposed. The letter just says "checkered wood grips" so I don't know if they are original or not.

They are not original, only the checkered Magnas would be original or the J frame target grips. That's what your letter refers to.

The Model 35 and 35-1 all had sq butt grip frames. The early I frame rebated extended grips have occasionally been fitted to later model guns, especially rd butt grip frames w/o the rebate.

I believe there's enough wood to cover the sq butt grip frame as well.

Does your 35-1 grips have 1 screw or two? The 2 screw are extended target grips from the pre war period.

.32 Reg. Police Postwar Target 'I' frame:

This is a 1957 era .32 Regulation Police Target 'I' frame with small trigger guard and leaf mainspring (pre Improved 'I' frame), 4", pre war/early postwar rebated rear grip strap with post war type checkering border on round top stocks with curved medallions. One of 196 made on left over pre war 'I' frames. You'll notice pre war sights, pre war/early post war hammer, and post war grooved trigger! Pictured w/1920, 2 screw target stocks w/gold medallions. A very convoluted transition model for sure. Brief details of these 196 guns are on page 128, 3rd edition, Standard Catalog of S&W, Supica and Nahas.
