Default Boston Police Guns looking for a list

I am attempting to start a collection of Boston Police guns, either marked or lettered to BPD.

Has anyone every created a list of the handguns that the Boston Police used in the 100 plus years? I am looking for Smiths but also Colts and anything else they may have used.

I don't have a list but I know they had some Colt Banker's Specials in .38 New Police issued to detectives back in the day.

Jeff,
No one has posted the S&W M&P 4th change as one of them. But I (you) have the letter to prove it.

Dan
That is right, I will add it right before the Model 10!

S&W M&P Model of 1905 4th Change S&W Special

The gun in question is the cornerstone of my collection, the first BPD gun I got (every journey starts with a single step!) I still can't believe how lucky I was with that!

Now I will have something more to look for than a US Navy Victory (sideplate marked), of course I will still be buying other Smith's, I have the disease!

I would be great once they get all the factory records from Smith on-line to be able to search by who they were delivered to, you could search for any gun sent to BPD!

Ruger Speed Six, chambered in .38 Special, marked BPD. This gun was produced in 1988, the last year of Ruger Six production.

Picked up two of the BPD Ruger Speed Sixes in 4" SS (. 38 Spl.) back in the late 80s. Still have one that is VERY tight and well made, about the best I have ever seen. It wears a set of custom round butt Spegels.

Always wondered what "BPD" was and only figured it out about a year ago.

I just an very interesting BPD S&W Model 10, I got it from a guy who got it directly from the Officer who carried it! The Officer wrote a letter documenting his career with the Boston Police as well as the use of the gun.
He documents using it in an armed confrontation where he states "I fired twice and the man went down"
It is really worn on the right grip and shows 25 years of holster wear, he got it new in 1961 from BPD and carried until he retired in 1985. My guess is that he used to rest his hand on the gun in the holster (I do that!). The grips number to the gun.
I traded a WWII Remington Rand 1911A1 for it and a Springfield Civil War Musket and a Police Inspector badge. I was tempted to just trade straight up, I wanted it that bad, but held out.

Jeff, congrats on adding another one and that's a great history to go along with it. That should go well with the pair you have. We need to see a group shot as well.

I had a Boston PD marked Smith and Wesson 3000 riot gun with a wood butt stock and synthetic forearm. It had a brass shield tacked on the bottom of the pistol grip with the Boston police mark.

Here are my BPD guns.
I just got the ship date on the new gun, M&P Pre-10 Dec 1953.

This is one of the interesting things about collecting identified guns, the condition is less important than the condition of the gun (to my mind anyway)

All three of the siblings show considerable wear, in the case of the latest one (1953) 32 years of holster wear.

I agree with the luck part, I was calling the guy about a .22 he had for sale and in chit chatting it came out that he had this BPD gun that he really didn't want to get rid of, I guess I found the right trade (a 1911 WWII).

A QUESTION: on the S&W Model 10's and the Ruger Single 6 and the more modern guns, did BPD roll mark or do any kind of BPD Marking on the guns?

added a big brother to my BPD collection! I was at the Wilminton show this weekend handing out my new postcards advertising that I am buying Boston Police marked guns (not just Smiths - heavens) and someone overheard me and approached me saying he had a Smith Model 64 that he would be willing to sell. He got it from a dealer many years ago who got a whole bunch of unissued .38's from BPD, in fact he said he had the choice of consecutive numbers and picked B.P.D. 13 ( I wish he had bought 2 or 3 sequential numbers!) it had the original box and cleaning rod and brush. The rod and brush are still in an unopened bag and the warrantee card is there un-filled in. The gun is frame marked B.P.D. 13 He said the dealer said it was never fired but I think it was test fired at the factory as when I cleaned above the forcing cone there was a hint of soot.

I have a question, I am including a picture of the sticker on the original box, what do all the markings mean, some are obvious, some I am not sure about. Also on the sticker in the bottom left corner is the number 13 which is the number on the gun. Under Special Features it says "L270" what is that?

This is my 4th BPD gun (3 Smiths)

Not positive, but I will give it a whirl.

SS=Stainless Steel 3=3"barrel R (over Stocks)=Round butt SM (over TT (target trigger)= small

Not sure about the L270. Could mean lot 270 or perhaps Location 270 specifying a location in the vault where this run of guns was stored??? Maybe even stands for Law Enforcement agency 270 which is S&W code for BPD???

Ben C.: Here's a Colt O.P. marked B.P.D. and shipped in 1939. It looks like there a lot of B.P.D. marked guns and you could end up with quite a pile of them. Good hunting.

That is what frustrates me, in Massachusetts we cannot buy a Glock unless we are current LEO's or Retired LEO's, they are not on both approved lists, although you can buy them from a private citizen where the lists don't apply. I was an LEO for 5 years but that doesn't count.
I will probably never have a BPD Glock, but should be able to get the rest.

This is my BPD marked .38 Ruger Speed Six.......just looking for info on it.

I have already replaced the Sile rubber grips with a new pair of factory wood grips, and now am debating whether to add a factory spurless DAO hammer or to keep the gun as it is. I just have a "thing" for 4" stainless DAO revolvers.

The Ruger is one of the guns I am looking for, among others.

The Smith .22 cal, was that for the pistol team?

hi
I don't think so because they were fixed sight guns
I think they were used for training because they were the same frame size as the the duty guns. indoor range cheap to shoot.

There's some good info on the BPD Speed Sixes on the Ruger forum......there were only about 2,000 ordered in 1986 or so. If you see one, fall all over it!

stantheman86, the Speed Sixes were our last issued revolver, replacing the S&W Model 64s. Guys loved the Speed Sixes. We still have some at our range, used for testing civilians for their CCW licenses. They were issued up until 1988.

Well another great find!!! and the letters to prove it.

3 sequentially numbered Colt Officers Model Target .38 Specials. Only 11 sent to Boston PD for the target team, and of the 11 they were all within a 20 number serial range but only 3 of them were sequential.
I KNOW OWN THE THREE OF THEM THAT WERE SEQUENTIALLY NUMBERED

Two are heavy barrel and one is pencil barrel, bores are mirror and sharp rifling, finish is about 60% but no corrosion.

These are the highlight of my collection, now if I could just get a Glock 19 a S&W 649 and a Colt Detectives Special

I have seen Ben's collection of BPD guns. It is impressive. You can tell the passion he has for his collection in the way he has it set up and his knowledge of each piece. At the last show we set up together, he bought a BPD gun from a Massachusetts State Police officer. I can't wait to see the new additions. Keep up the good work!

Don
I am still waiting on the letter for the Colt PP from the Mass State cop, Steve thinks it might be NYPD. We are both pretty sure that it is not Boston even thought the guy said it was. The letter which should be in, in about a month should tell. But in this hobby you have to take chances as you never know. I do like your idea of getting papers and medals and patches that relate!

I had deleted a bunch of my pictures off photobucket as I was running out of space, so I decided to open a second account for just gun pictures.
I wanted to post a family portrait, you saw my new additions in post #35 here are the rest of my guns, I do have another 8 or 10 that are duplicates

At the "family reunion"

Need to change the list, the Smith Model 45 is either a Pre-Model 45 or both a pre-model and a model 45. I will have to check with Dave Nowack to see if his BPD Model 45 is a model 45 or a pre-model 45.
My new BPD is a pre-model 45, shipped in April 1957 with no model number on the gun. The 3rd edition says there were 20 guns BPD numbers 16T to 35T mine is 18T

I no longer own any guns from Boston P.D. However, I did have a Police Positive from the mid '20s in .38 New Police (aka .38 S&W) that was marked for them and a S&W Model of 1896 .32 from the Boston & Maine Railroad.

I do have PD revolvers that were carried IN Boston.

1) Colt Police Positive .38 NP from 1934 - Metropolitan District Commission

2) S&W Model 65 .357mag., Mass. Registry Motor Vehicles

Best,
Charles

"We still have some Ruger Speed Sixes at our range for civilians to take a LTC test with." Kelly I used one to qualify as Boston Special back in '02 at Moon Island. A coffee can with a Speed Six nose down in it and a handful of .38 semi wadcutters......and a short walk to the range.

You would be correct. My father retired BPD once showed me the small indoor practice range they used in the basement of their defunct police academy building. Interesting because 45 years after he was in the Academy, I was working in the adjacent building in the City of Boston Graphic Arts Department. He came to my building to visit and asked if the custodian had keys to the whole building, I said I think so, we got him to bring his old set of keys to the basement and on the fifth or sixth key the door opened and it was like going back in time. There were still a few empty shells on the floor some .38 and some .22lr and I asked him what was up with the .22? He said the city was too cheap to let us shoot the .38's all the time so we had dedicated .22lr versions of the the same revolvers that we carried.

It was not only for training that they had them. The Pistol Team, at least in the late 1930's had them as well. They were Colt Officer's Models in .22LR. In 1937 they received a shipment of 5 of them from Colt, I have the only one that I know of and it letters to the Pistol Team. I also have 1 of 3 pre-model 45's BPD .22's (2 others are not BPD) they have 6 inch barrels and S&W made about 40-50 of them, basically Post Office Models but with 6 inch barrels. They sent 20 to the BPD There is one in Michigan and one in Florida, they are in better shape than mine, I saw one at the Orlando S&W show. Kelly didn't even know about the Colt .22 target pistols.

Previous owner had S&W jewel the hammer and trigger, what a crime.

Colt

added correct ejector rod nut and correct stocks

Man, you sound like the guy to ask this question. Any idea who may have modified this gun or what the initials mean?

I have never heard of a Dorchester Police Department. Boston Police has a district C-11 in Dorchester which is part of Boston. I don't know why a gun in 1938 would letter to the Dorchester Police Dept. At the very least I would think that maybe it meant instead of the armory it was sent right to the BPD Dorchester district. I will ask the BPD historian about that.
The initials on the butt looks like someone's initials and the date could be anything, a date they bought it or retired or who knows.

I know where they "were", at the armory, you can see all 10 in the lower left.

Emailed the Historian and he got back to me in a couple minutes. Here is his reply
"It's Boston Police they might have sent it to the Dorchester District always has been Boston Police. Just like they call the East Boston Police."

I would think an actual factory letter would say Boston Police, but no guarantees. All BPD guns were stamped BPD and a rack number, even the target guns. I wonder if there was a stamping on the backstrap or butt (they usually were marked in one of those two places)
