S&W Mod 36 age?
I have an older Mod 36 3" bbl Ser #3798**. There's no frame designation. Could it possibly be an I frame? How can I tell? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum.
I will assume it is marked M36 inside the yoke. If it is, then it's a J-Frame. There were no I-Frame .38 Spls.
If that serial is not preceded by a "J" it was born sometime in the early to mid '60s. If it has a "J" it was born in about 1976.

If that serial # has no J in front of it, and it's 38 S&W Special caliber (not 38 S&W) you have a 1st year production 1950, 38 Chief's Special.
It's a J frame but has a shorter grip and a rounder trigger guard than the later and current Chief's Special Mod 36. It was called the "Baby J". They look like I frames with a longer cylinder. Probably has a 1/2 moon front sight and no rib on the barrel.

If it isn't stamped with the model number, the it isn't a Model 36. It's simply a Chief's Special.
