Nice gun indeed. This is one that I would like to acquire.
What is the story on the signing of the grip?

Moose-I got both the pre 27 and this gun from the same 82 y/o gent who had owned them for many years. He told me in 1956 he sent his wife to the NRA convention and had Elmer sign the right grip panel for him. He was to busy with his gun shop to go himself. Tonight I will attempt to take and post a picture of the grip.

Very cool. I corresponded with Elmer Keith on a few things and still have the letters from when he was writing for G&A.
I wish I could have met him, he was a huge influence on many of us.

I have S159XXX and it has the "W" main spring as well. Mine is not as clean as yours though. It's shooter grade so I cut it to 5" and shoot the heck out of it. (smile)

I've got pre-25 S130xxx; unfortunately it is "open on the records" so no ship date available. I was told ones around it were shipped in summer of '56.
Mine was not a "W" spring, but still a good shooter.

You need some help with that Elmer signed grip story. I'm sure there are some far more interesting stories around here.
Elmer and I were Elk hunting back in '58 and ....

That 82 yo gentleman had some very nices guns. The non-relieved grips are nice to find on any gun, but with the signature story, they are fantastic.
PS- Did he have any more guns?

What is the story on the "W" mainspring? I have not seen one before in my limited gun viewing.

Search for W mainspring on this forum. There's previous discussion about this uncommon factory variation.
