I inherited this gun from my fathers estate and want to know the year it was made and a value so it can be sold. 6inch barrel Very shiny bluing Inside numbers are K369249 MOD-48. There isn't a scratch on this thing..I would say it is excellent or better than excellent condition..theres no box or paperwork..just the gun
22 M.R.F. CTG. on the right side of barrel and SMITH & WESSON on the left side of barrel.
Stamp on right side plate reads:
MADE IN U.S.A.

SMITH & WESSON
SPRINGFIELD, MASS.
Smith & Wesson decorative stamp on right side plate.. 2 screws on right side plate..
The wood on the handle is smooth not textured or formed

That's a Model 48 that was probably shipped in 1959 or 1960. I'd bet you could get $500-600 for it without much trouble. (But I'm in California and due to local effects may be overestimating what folks in other states might be willing to pay.)

That is a Model 48, which is a .22 caliber revolver, but in the longer
.22 magnum cartridge. Its probably a 98 or 99% gun, from what I can
see. The grips are very nice early rosewood smooth target stocks, and
while very very nice, are probably not the original stocks. That is OK,
however.
I don't know what these are selling for today, as I don't collect
these post-WW2 .22 models. However, in that condition, it ought to
be at least a $600 to $800 gun. Lee Jarrett or David Carroll would
have a good idea about its value. If you don't hear from others as
to an estimate of value, email me and I can give you contact
information for Lee or David.

Hi Annie, and welcome aboard.
Surprise, surprise-
You have a Model 48 there.
Seriously, the Mod 48 is also called the K-22 Magnum. It is chambered for the 22 Magnum Rim Fire.
Yours is a very early gun in that model's life.
It also appears to be a special order gun since it has ALL the bells and whistles.
Those special features are:
Target Trigger
Target Hammer
Red Ramp front sight
Smooth Rosewood Target Stocks
Does it have a White outline around the rear sight notch?
Gun is around 59 or 60.
Easily worth $700-750 if there are no problems we can't see.
If you have any desire to sell it, I would be a buyer.

Annie-what Lee said. Since you dont have the box which would show how gun was delivered, you may want to spend the the $50 to have the gun "lettered" by Smith & Wesson. This letter will tell you when the gun was shipped from the factory and where it was shipped to. It will also detail what options (such as the red ramp front sight, most came with what is known as a patridge sight) were on the gun when it was shipped. You will get lots of good information from this board.

Annie, you may have an exceptional gun there, as it has a number of non-standard features. I concur that getting an authenticating letter from S&W would enhance its value if those features prove to be factory original. Just for comparison, here is a picture of a standard model 48-2 made in January, 1976. Welcome to the forum - you'll find a lot to interest you here!

How do I get an authenticity letter from S&W? If it increases value I would love for them to authenticate the revolver. Red ramp front sight and white outline on back. This gun is so sweet. She's absolutely beautiful.

I am almost certain those features are original, and getting the letter would not increase the value of the gun beyond the cost of the letter- $50.
The features are why I valued the gun at 700-750. Spend $50, wait 3 months, and even if the gun increases to $800, where is the gain?

I would almost bet money on it that it is an H.H. Harris Gun....especially if you are from Illinois. I have a similar gun with the 8 3/8" barrel...same features/options.
Harris would often order his guns with a red ramp, white outline, TT/TH, and smooth Rosewood presentation stocks. It was almost cookie cutter for him to do this...per a VERY good source here in Illinois.

I would keep it if I could...times are tough right now in Central Illinois. My personal memories of my father are much more important to me then any gun he owned.

There are several collectors in Central Illinois - one that comes to
mind goes by "H Richard". He posts quite a bit, so its not hard to
find a contact address. If possible, he ought to see the gun.
Here is a link to a thread that he started. Just click on his name,
and then you can send him a message :

Hello. Mike contacted me to help you about your questions about your Mod. 48. I am located in Quincy, IL. If you are near me I would be happy to look it over and answer any questions you may have. I can assist you in getting a S&W letter if you so desire, but these do take about 6-8 weeks for S&W to process. Give me a PM (Private message) by putting your cursor over my name and clicking (by the AVATAR) and it will give you a screen to select the PM. We can communicate direct from there.

That is a beautiful S&W. A buyer and a seller would be happy around $600-$650 face to face. Thank you for sharing.
