Hiway Patrolman find!
Hello!
I just bought a 6", 5 screw, pinned and recessed Highway Patrolman, serial # S13338X from '54-'55. It's not been shot much but needed a good cleaning. The stocks aren't matched and maybe not the right style, but were all I had to replace the rubber Hogues that someone had put on it. It has very slight blue wear on the barrel and is otherwise 90%, or better, I think. It shoots great and has a trigger pull of just under four pounds. I plan to keep it as a shooter! How'd I do at $500 delivered?
Dick

Very nice find sir. If I'm not mistaken that may be the earliest serial # seen here. Congrats.
eta: Not only that, but you seem to be one of the only two 6'' 5 screw HP's.

Very nice. Bet it is going to be very accurate.
I happen to have a 4" 5-screw Hiway P'man @ SN S 1166XX.

It's a beaut! One note of caution: It looks like you have a trigger shoe on it. Be careful to make sure it is tight. They have a tendency to loosen, slip down and lock up the gun.

Thanks, CBS!
I posted the serial number there.
Old Cop,
Thanks for the tip. I had a trigger shoe on a K-38, years ago, and liked it. Feels kind of good on this gun, too. I'll be sure to keep it tight and may take it off, later.
Thanks again to both of you!

Looks good. You don't find many 5 screw Highway Patrolman. Congratulations and I'm envious. Now all you need are diamond target stocks and you'll be set.

I have an S106xxx and a pre-27 in the S133XXX range, practically cousins. I have another pre-27 right in the range and cannot recall the s/n at the moment.
How long before we have a consecutive pair here?

Hello Reddog
Here is a 4" Example that shipped in June of 1954 Just two Months after the Highway Patrolman model was released into the selling market. it is not near as nice as yours but still in good shape for it's year. It's serial number is S11090X and it is shown wearing it's original factory installed Magnas. Regards, Hammerdown

Yours looks to be near perfect! Wish I had your stocks on mine! Isn't it odd, they both have a trigger shoe?

For the record, when I said it may be the earliest serial noted here, I was referring to the 6''ers.
Although after reviewing the HP thread, there seem to be a few 5 screw 6''ers around, but not listed in the thread.

Check my two posts in the Ultimate Highway Patrolman thread. Serial # S111xxx. I didn't realize there was interest in who has the lowest number, but mine might be a viable contestant for 6" models.

Hello Reddog
Mine has some barrel blushing on both sides of it and a definate turn line to it's finish, but other than that, it is in decent shape. I think Trigger shoes were the Rave back then as Target Triggers were just coming alive and those that did not have them wanted to be in the club... Hammerdown

Nice find Reddog! You don't see too many 5 screw HPs in that kind of shape! Most were carried pretty extensively. Here's my 1955ish 6"er:

And my June 1955 shipped (S1323XX) 6" along with the flyer introducing the 6" barrel and target stocks. Note the target stock originally cost an extra $4.50.

I'll play
My HP S110389 is a 6" with smooth, football relieved, silver disc, un-numbered target grips. TT, TH, WO rear, Yellow ramp front. I know, I know, I should get a letter. I am curious, too, but I love the piece just the way it is, anyway. I will post some pictures as soon as I get a 3rd grader to show me how.

How about a Hiway Patrolman that was before they came stamped M28? I got one a few months ago. Ser# 119xxx. Query found that it was made in the first year production, 1954. I ran it for sale on here but got no serious responses.

I found your HP for sale ad. You wanted to do a face to face deal, so naturally that limits your pool of buyers.
It sounds like a nice one. Why not post a picture here?

I have seen S109xxx and it was like new and terribly over priced at $750. Thats when most of these were going for $225.

At $750? It’s not over priced in today’s market. Any decent N frame priced under $1,000 today is a buy. Like land there not making any new m28’s anymore. Besides no new m58’s, no new nickel finishes. It’s only worthless paper money. Buy now what you can afford. We only pass this way once no mulligans here in life. Money can’t take it with us.
I said in a before post above the 357’s were next. Five showed up at my online dealer a while back. These are selling faster than fried twinkies at the fair. My dealer prices were $695 for m28’s and $795 for m27-2’s. Forget the old days there long gone it’s a sellers market.
My first 4x4 Chevy truck in ‘73 was $3,605, today that’s around $50 k should I wait for the prices to come down?

I bought my 28 last year and have followed the prices since. While I only paid 600 for it a year ago, the clunker guns are 7-800 now, and the nice ones are all close to 1000 bucks.
They are not making classic Smiths anymore, and Covid has driven prices way up. I really don't see the classic out of production guns every being cheaper again.

I’m not sure if it’s the covid or the newer, younger, gun owners are sick of plastic guns and want real metal guns to shoot now. I think the revolvers are making a strong comeback. The demand lately shows that. Unfortunately with the demand comes the price increase too. We will still see a roller coaster ride price wise. Grab what you want when you see it.
Gun show advise,,,
Ask the seller to look at a gun, do not put it down if you intend to purchase it. I trust no one looking over my shoulder who might grab it to buy it. Everytime I stop to look at a sellers table a crowd forms. Ever notice that. Also to do a gun show right it takes two days. I like Saturday afternoons and Sunday at 12ish. More stuff is shown on Sunday they didn’t have room for on Saturday. Just my thoughts.

That may be true, I don't know. What I think is really driving the market now is fear of a lawless, every-man-for-himself future. Coming to a street near you.

They are not making classic Smiths anymore, and Covid has driven prices way up. I really don't see the classic out of production guns every being cheaper again.

About 6 years back I had a chance to get a 1980s 28-2 unfired brand new in the box from the dealer who ordered it from S&W for 1000. I thight it was way over priced.......you never pay too much, you only buy too soon....

I’ve learned the prices only go up in guns. What maybe affordable today maybe higher priced tomorrow it all comes out even in the wash. Save here to spend more on the next one. Wether it’s older or newer classics it’s all good.

How about serial number S119***. before they were model 28. Just stamped Hiway Patrolman, no model number on the gun. I've offered to sell this 98% gun for $1150 but no takers.
