Help with .22 Revolver

I have what I thought was a K-17 but now thinking it is a pre 17. It has 5 screws, pinned barrel, and the serial no. is 544XX. It has a marking of V7. Can anyone help?

I assume there is a K prefix to this serial number - somewhere to the
left of it on the butt . That is a part of the serial number. Does this
full serial number appear on the rear face of the cylinder, and on the
flat area under the barrel ?

This V7 mark - where is it on the gun ?

Assuming the serial number is K54xxx, this is a 1949-ish gun. Its a
K-22. This is way before model numbers.

The V7 is above the serial no. on the frame when you open the cylinder. There is no K prefix anywhere. Could it be an outdoorsman? Thanks.

Like to see a picture, of course. The Model 17 was the first model of the K-22 series. Otherwise known as K-22, maybe Outdoorsman too.

The number on the frame when you open the cylinder may not be the Ser No. - It may be an assembly number. Please show a photo if you can.

Look on the bottom of the butt (grip frame) Like this

It wouldn't be an Outdoorsman because those had six-digit serial numbers starting a little above 630000 . Also, an OD would have had a round-top barrel -- no grooved rib of the type seen on the postwar Masterpieces.

Some pics would really help.

If this gun has fixed sights, the serial number would not have a K-prefix. Starting in 1948, fixed-sight K-frame .38s (the Military & Police model) had a C-prefix serial number.

I'm thinking its a K-22 3rd model and he looked inside the crane for the SN since many S&Ws and other revolvers have the SN there.

If he took the SN of the butt, I suppose it could be a pre model 34, 35 or 43. Anything else is a six digit or has a prefix.

Many people don't know to check the butt for the SN because they always check the crane or because the grips cover the butt of the frame.

That should be 1951.

your k-22 should be wearing a set of diamond magna's,there are lots of posts on these forums that will show you exactly what you need,and i'm sure someone can fix you up with a nice pair,good luck,curt.
