Default Pre model 29 date of production please

Hello, i'm new so forgive me if someone has posted similar information. I am looking for a model designation and approximate date of production for a serial# S1771XX pre model 29 .44 Magnum. I am considering buying it . It is in 95% condition with the original grips. The seller wants $1800. The outside stamped markings look a little buffed out as in reblued. While the serial # on the frame inside is nice and sharp. Did S&W mark the guns they reblued? Thanks in advance !

Welcome to the Forum. The .44 Magnum experts will be along shortly, but the one in question was likely shipped in 1957. That was also the model designation until it was stamped MOD 29. starting sometime that year.

A factory refinished gun (up until the mid-late 1970s) would have had either a 4-digit month/year code, or the letters R-B or R-S within a rectangle (or both) stamped on the left grip frame under the stocks.

Unless it has a 5" barrel, in my opinion it is not an $1800 gun if refinished. Can you post photos? Hope this is helpful.

If the 44 Magnum is refinished, it is worth about $750. It's value is as a shooter and has no "collectibility". If the gun is not refinished and is 95 percent, I would value it at around $1050. The asking price would have to be for an all original gun in 98 percent condition or better and have nearly perfect stocks. Another refinish mark is a B followed by a diamond stamped next to it.
