Impossible to say without more information. S&W made several models that chambered the .38 Special round at that time. Can you post photos of the revolver?
At the very least, please answer these questions:
Five chambers in the cylinder or six?
Adjustable sights or fixed sights? (Fixed: just a groove in the top of the frame instead of an adjustable rear sight block.)
Barrel length? (Measure from muzzle to face of cylinder.)
Do you have the original box, tools, and paperwork for the gun, or is it just the gun by itself?
Serial number from butt of gun? (Include a preceding letter like C or V if there is one.)
When you say "never been blued" I assume you mean has not been refinished, as the gun would have come from the factory blued unless it has a nickel finish.
