N frame 357 Magnum
What would an N frame 357 Magnum with a serial # of 51xxx be? Isn't that too early for a pre 27?

Surely not! I saw one on a local sales site for $475. I asked him the serial number, and that's what he gave me. What elsee could it be?

He may have told you the assembly number on the inside of the crane. Tell him you want the number on the butt of the gun. If that's it then your in luck.

If that's the serial number, I should say "I'll take it!" Right?

I was just about to ask this question also. Looks like a 5 or 6 inch pre 27. Hard to tell from the pictures he posted. If I wasn't broke I would buy it anyhow.

$475 for a RM or a pre27 or a M27 or a M27-1 or M27-2...I'll take it if it's in any kind of good condition. Buy it, worry about what it is after it's your's.
Then post pictures.

It's about as close to you as to me. It had some holster wear and non original grips. Probably a good price, but too far to drive for me.....but for a Registered Magnum, I'd be in the car now.

N frame 357 with serial 51xxx would have to be a pre-war Magnum.
Must verify the number. Check the butt. Include any letters.

I hope this is the correct forum for what I have. I couldn't find anything that seemed to fit. What it is a model 57 stainless .41 magnum S/N of N806329. I have the box and wooden grips as well. I too am trying figure what the value of this beautiful handgun might be. Any takers?

There are many on this forum that are far more expert on S&W production than I, but I will bet a dollar to a doughnut that what you have is actually a carbon steel Model 57 that is hard nickel plated. Could have been the factory, but might have been later in its life.
Look at the underside of the barrel for a stamped "S" or a "N". Also look at the inside of the frame just underneath the left hand grip for the same thing. Let us know what you find. ......... Big Cholla
