Default Help with DOB

I was given a pistol from the family of a deceased 30+ year Dallas policeman. He told me this was his issue gun. #K227***. It's a very nice pistol. Any help would be appreciated.

Should be in the 1955-56 range as a pretty good estimate.

Here's a pic if I can figure out how to post it. The gentleman who carried this gun told me he was a patrolman (and carrying this pistol) when he found Lee Oswalds jacket.

Is this what is called the 'combat' model? From looking at another post, I guess this is a 'pre-15' maybe.

When S&W started assigning model numbers in 1957, your K-38 Combat Masterpiece became the Model 15. Sometime after 1968 the stocks it wears now were added to it. The originals would have been walnut of the same pattern, but with a diamond around the screw escutcheons.

This model was very popular with uniformed officers in the 50s, 60s and 70s and for good reason: they were easy to shoot well.

Buford57, Thank you very much for the info. I figured I could find out something about this pistol on this site. You are right, this is an easy pistol to shoot well. What is one worth these days?
