Rework date stamp?

I have a K22 outdoorsman and much older 38 M&P target that have the same stamp inside the frame. They both have a rework star stamped next to the sn on the butt and a 10.50 stamp on the frame. I assume these are date stamps and both where reworked in October of 1950..

You are correct.

It could be a coincidence, or it could be that both guns were owned
by the same person, and were sent back for similar repairs - maybe.

Thanks for the confirmation.

They where supposed to be from the same original owner. I believe they where both sent back to the factory for a reblue at the same time. I was pretty sure that was a date stamp but it definately ties the guns to the same owner.

If you are going to keep these guns, and have an extra $100, you
could request two factory letters - one for each gun at $50 each.
If the guns were shipped to the same store, or at least to stores
in the same or nearby towns, that would be further evidence that
perhaps it was the same owner. Who know - you might get real
lucky and find that they were shipped to the same person.

I have read only a few threads in our forum up to now, so I haven't run across the answer to these questions that I have. Does the star usually include the rework date stamp? And does the star or date usually mean a refinish, or could it be another issue with the major parts repaired at S&W?
I have read the how to identify a re-blue post, star punched under the re-blue, softened edges, etc. Do I read into that info that a star punched over blue would mean a different job other then re-finish?
Thanks in advance. All of these little details will come in handy someday at a sale when I find one that wants to stay stuck in my grip.

If you know the name of the individual who owned the guns you should include that with your letter requests. Since the repair orders were usually filed by the sender's name, it is possible that Roy Jinks can find the actual rework records.

I have a K-38 & K-22 that I bought from a dealer closing his store. I sent for letters on both. The reply I got back from Roy was they were shipped on the same day to Jurek Brothers Greenfield MA. He further stated he felt they were Companion guns. I too, would invest in letters, were yours in their boxes?

I believe the star denotes major factory work or repair such as a barrel replacement or trim, cylinder replacement or a refinish. Now a lot of times major work will require a refinish but I don't believe the star just means refinish. Also minor work such as hammer/trigger replacement would not rate a star.
