Default S&W .38 Special CTG 1920 maybe?

Could someone a lot more knowledgeable help to date this for me?

Here are some pics:

Patent dates are....OCT.8.01DEC.17.01FEB.6.06SEPT.14.09.DEC.29.14

# inside the cylinder swing out is 8441

Serial # 256598 on butt cylinder and barrel.

Nice revolver, I have had it for about 30 years or so and do fire it at the range with my other ones every now and then using target loads.

Any help is appreciated.

Brad Miller,
Dover, Penna.

Welcome to the Forum. Your .38 M & P probably shipped a little earlier than the 1920 decade. It has stocks from the 1910-'20 era (checkered, gold medallions), and I have seen a 1920 shipped gun in the 325000 SN range, so I think yours is likely pre-WW I. Other Forum members have their own SN databases and can narrow the year down for you. Enjoy!

You have a .38 M&P Model of 1905/Fourth change. Production of this variety began in 1915 at a serial number a little under 250000, so your gun is likely to be of 1916 vintage.

Bear in mind that S&W never had a policy of shipping in serial number order, so your gun may have have been shipped after a stay in the inventory room. Since the shipping date is considered the birth date for S&W handguns, yours could be a 1917 or even 1918 revolver.

255196 shipped July 22, 1916, and 257354 shipped August 1916, so I think an estimate of 1916 is about right. Ed.

Nice gun. I think it may be a refinish. Not a bad one though. I could be wrong but the line around the sideplate looks a little too obvious.
I love this style of grips the most on these old M&Ps.

Everyone has your SN pretty well bracketed into 1916. I have been keeping a list of M&P and Winchester models and ship dates that have been posted, thanks to all of you for giving me a few more numbers.

It definitely has been re-finished, not by S&W, and probably sometime since 1950 from the color of it.

All great input, Thanks a bunch.

I did have it re-blued around 1985, only because I plan to keep it in my collection and enjoy shooting it.

Thanks again.

If 325XXX is around 1920, could someone help me nail down a date for SN 330XXX? I just inherited a few guns and this pistol's history is eluding me.

Probably shipped around March 1920. But without a factory letter, this is just an educated guess based upon nearby SNs.

Thanks for validating my assumptions. Looking forward to testing it out.
