Default Triple Lock

My mother in law gave my son her fathers and his great grandfathers S&W .44 spl. Triple Lock revolver this weekend. Our son has been a revolver shooter since the age of three and has a nice collection of S&W Shooters. My mother in law said she wanted a direct blood line grand child who would appreciated it and keep it to have it and he was the only one to fit the bill.
He used to shoot a lot with his great grandfather and they spent a lot of time at the range together. Grand dad as he was called passed away about 20 years ago at the ripe old age of 87. He went to the range the day before and was tired the next day and passed in his afternoon nap.

The gun is a S&W .44spl Hand Ejector "Triple Lock" with a six inch? barrel. Its in about 90% condition as the old man took excellent care of it (as he did all his firearms). Its Serial Number 135XX. It has a little holster wear on the end of the barrel and on the front of a couple of the cylinder chambers (flutes?)..Other than that, the blueing is still like new. The top strap has no cutting on it.

I told him I'd ask some of the more
Knowledgable Members of the forum if they would help with the approximate date it was manufactored or when left the factory. I don't think that value has anything to do with it as its one of those things that will never leave the family. But if any one has any guesstaments I sure he would appreciate it as he'll add it to his insurance policy.

Thanks for any help.

What a wonderful family gift! Sounds like it is in great condition, which means you would pay well over a thousand if you found it something like it on a gun store shelf.

Other guns with serial numbers in the vicinity of that one were shipping in 1916 or 1917. I agree that an heirloom like this deserves to be lettered.

Any chance we can see pictures of it? Triple locks are one of those signature S&W models that deserve to be illustrated liberally and often.

#13037 shipped in December of 1917. I would say early 1918 would be a decent guess for your son's gun based on the sales volume of that gun back then.

It sure is nice to see these great treasures go somewhere they are appreciated!

Thanks gentlemen for the replys.

I'm sure my son will want to get a S&W Letter on the gun.
The Revolver was purchased in Oklahoma by my son's great great grandfather who bought it several years after the Ok Land Rush and when he was discharged after WWI. It was said that the great great grandfather felt he needed a pistol in addition to his Winchester and Shotgun in the wild and wooly early Oklahoma days. He later gave the gun to his son (my son's great grandfather) in 1926 when his son moved his family to Texas as there were many crooks in the Oil Boom Towns of the Panhandle of Texas.

What a fabulous family legacy that gun has. Sounds like your son is well deserving of such a fine family heirloom.
