Default Help identifying model number!

Hello, I am new to the forum. I just inherited this pistol and the paperwork only shows the model as D/A, as in double action.

There is a number inside the frame 55975.
The serial number is K 169780.

Any help in telling me what year and model number this is would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Welcome to the forum.

Yes, what rigmover said.

It has a 4" barrel and that's the standard length. also known as the K22 because it's made on the K size frame. It became the Model 18 c. 1957. They have become very popular lately, especially the early ones like yours. They were 1st produced in 1949.

Thanks, I knew it had to be about that vintage. That is half box of old 22LR with it. There is also an old Marbles pistol cleaning set that came with it.

It looks like new. Rifling is very clean. There is one small spot on the cylinder that has a touch of surface rust but that will be taken care of very soon.

One piece of advice - do NOT store the gun in that holster. People often do, but the leather can trap moisture and cause corrosion. Give you a real sinking feeling when you pull the gun out and see rust on the cylinder.

They are fabulous revolvers, being both fun to shoot and highly collectible. Watch out for the bluing when you are cleaning off the surface rust. You chose a really nice gun to introduce yourself with. Welcome.

Welcome to the forum. I can't add much to what has been said except that you might remove the grips and see if they are serial numbered to the gun.

Glad to be here. This is the first S&W I have owned. I did take the grips off and there are no markings. I did know about not storing it in the holster, but thanks for the reminder. I think the spot is from sitting in the cardboard box for who knows how many years. I know it has been at least 20 years. I believe the pistol has not been fired in at least 30 years. I am anxiously awaiting the chance to get some range time with it.
