Default Combat masterpiece grips and Model 15-2 grips

I recently picked up my pre Model 15 Combat masterpiece. I know its impossible to tell for sure without a factory letter but I think I am close. It was wearing a set of non diamond magnas

I had a set of diamond magnas laying around so I put them on.

My 15-2 was wearing presentation grips on it when I got it.

I cleaned up the magnas that were on my CM and replaced the presentation grips that were on my 15-2. The serial number on my 15-2 is K772XX. I know it is right around the time S&W went from diamonds to non diamonds but am I close?

Next thing is to get rid of that cheesey gold trigger and hammer it's just that it shoots so well I have been less than concerned about it. What would be a good factory type replacement? Could it have come with target hammer and trigger?

Someone mentioned around 1968 for the disappearance of diamonds. Does that conform with your 15-2 serial number?

The K772XX serial number would date it to 1949 but the 15-2 didn't start until 1961. Is it possible there's another digit to the serial number? K772XXX, for example, would date it to 1967 which is near the transition from diamond magnas to non-diamond.

The diamond magnas were used until 1968, as previously posted.

I believe I would experiment a little with trying to strip the plating from your hammer & trigger. Bet it would come off. Wouldn't have to fit new ones, lot less expensive. New hammer & trigger, over $100.00, labor about the same, if you have to ship gun to gunsmith & back, about $125.00, total $325.00. Is it worth that to you to change 'em? I would think the case hardening is intact under that awful plating, if it's not, you can redo it pretty easily.

Sorry, thought I typed 3 x's. K772XXX is correct. I like the looks of the magnas better.

I do too . . . and a very nice 1967 Model 15-2 such as yours deserves a pair of diamond magnas!

Enjoy, Russ

Maybe I can find someone to trade me a nice set of period correct diamond magnas for the presentation grips?
