Dick, Depending on the S&W model you have they could be several things. What's the Model? Assuming it's a revolver, the 4 is usually a fitter's or inspector's mark. The 86 787 could be the assembly/work number and if it is, the same number will be on the crane if the Model is a Hand Ejector and the parts are original to the gun. If there's no number on the butt, or if the butt has a lanyard swivel, it could be the serial number. Tell us which model you have. Ed

Dick, The 85 787 should be the assembly number. If so, it may also be stamped on the back side of the sideplate,
and on the crane. If not, then I don't have an answer. ( I'm assuming the 787 does not have a dot like this: 7.87 If so, that's a date code for July 1987 when the gun was returned to S&W for repairs. ) The 85 would then be an inspector or fitter's mark. Ed.
