Another value question! 1905 2nd change
Hi, I know, everyone gets a lot of questions about the value of a gun! Sorry! but anyways I have been looking at a 1905 2nd change (I think-I did not look for the alignment pins in the cylinder). It has pits under a poor reblue job. Appears to be in very good mechanical condition-trigger feels good, cylinder is tight, barrel looks good. 38 special of course. Serial #105,XXX. And it is a target model. That is the main reason I am interested. I haven't seen one before. (Target 1905). They wanted $379 at first, now down to $300. It has a 6" barrel and is a square butt. Plastic grips. I know condition, condition, condition!! Is there any special reason to give in to the urge!! Thanks for all advice!

Say to yourself: Badly reblued over pits. Plastic grips. $300.
Now repeat it.
I know it is an early 1905 target model, but surely there are better ones to be had.
On the other hand: If the pits are not too bad, and if the screw holes are not dished and he sideplate edges not rounded over, I might consider taking it at $200. I would do so in hopes that a proper refinish by a reliable shop would undo some of the neglect and mistreatment of past years. I guess it depends on whether the stampings are still deep enough to be preserved.
That might be a first change. I have 102653, and it has no ejector star pins. 85% or more original finish, no rust or pits. Not a target, but I think the adjustable sights add only 20% to the value of a comparable fixed sight M&P. I paid about $350 for it at auction last year.
I have to believe that better guns are available at reasonable prices. Unless the price drops a lot further, I would pass.
(Psych alert: I'm kind of sour today because I bought a refinished .38 safety hammerless that I didn't need. It has its good points, but basically it's a dog. I have no idea why I said yes to it. And in the aftermath of that purchase, I may be overreacting to your find.)

I think there asking too much! David if you dont want your refinished safety hammerless then you must remember every S&W needs a safe home in it's retirement. That said I might be intrested.... Kyle

Did you get a chance to look closely at the adjustable rear sight ?
If so, from the side, does the slot for the blade come all the way
down to the windage adjusting screws ? Or, is it solid down to the
screws ?
