Default Herrett Shooting Stars

They look great on your 27. You did a fine job of finishing them.

They look great! Surprising how a little refinishing can really set the gun off compared to the old finish

Used a powerful chemical stripper to get the old finish off.

It was a jelly that you paint on and let it sit for 30 minutes.

Then I sanded with 400P 3x Norton sandpaper.

Then apply the first light coat of Tru-Oil, I diluted 3 parts Tru-Oil with one part mineral spirits, but this is not necessary. I applied with a paper towel folded till it is fairly small.

Then you wait at least an hour until completely dry. half a day is best.

Then sand it with the 400P sand paper.

Then repeat Tru-Oil and sanding at least 5 coats.

The last coat is put on very thin and rubbed with long strokes from end to end.

Work fast

I have found that all wood is beautiful.
It should be, considering where it comes from.

Tru-Oil has always brought out just enouch of the grain to make whatever it hits spectacular. Walnut, however, seems to be the best wood.

The difference is like day and night. Those old Herretts and old Mustang grips are great candidates for up grades.

They came out very nice and look great.
The older production grips by Herrett used a spray on laquer finish that did nothing to bring out the grain or beauty of the wood. It was cheap and quick allowing the grips to be sold at a very reasonable price but they always looked plain and light colored.
I have stripped and re-finished several sets with an oil finish ( Tru-Oil or one of the Tung Oil Finishes such as MinWax or Formby's) and in every case the difference was amazing.
