Default Question - RR/WO sights

hello everyone, I am new here, hope to learn a lot from you guys

anyway I am looking at getting a 27 4-screw, mfg '61

can you tell me about the RR/WO sights? were they an option back then or added later as a mod?

I am interested in knowing if the gun i am looking at has been modified.

also what kind of grips would a '61 27 have on it? i have been learning a lot about Smiths and the diamond stocks, etc.., curious when they made the change to the normal target grip you see more of

thanks, enjoying learning from this site

Red ramp front and white outline rear sights were an option in 1961. The stocks could be either diamond targets or diamond magnas. If the gun has magnas on it they should be numbered to the gun on the inside of the right grip if they are original to the gun. -Chad

Question

Didn't the .44 Magnum, since 1956, come equipped with RR/WO sights?

I would imagine that S&W would furnish them on any gun after that, on special order.

Default Colored Inserts and White Outline Blades...

These have been around a long while. You could order a Registered Magnum before WW2 with this combination.

The red inserts from the earlier 27's, 29's, 57's, etc seem to be somewhat muted in color comparatively. Later, in the 70's they seemed to be almost orange and to me at least, much brighter.

Here's a 29 from the same era as your 27...

With regard to the stocks on your gun, they should look like this...

This 27-1 is from the same approximate period.

"can you tell me about the RR/WO sights? were they an option back then or added later as a mod?"

As stated, the RR/WO sights were optional.

They could also have been added later on too.

In the 1970s and into the '80s, I added RRs and WO rear sights to a number of handguns for fellow police officers. I added a bunch of target and combat triggers and target hammers, too.

The RR & WI sights were options since the early 50s. Along with TT & TH.
