Finished K38 Project
Last fall I acquired a decent K38 for a really decent price, as it was set up as a shooter bulls-eye gun. Ultra dot sight and (originally pachmayer rubbers).
I finally located both a front and rear sight, period correct from a great guy in Kent,WA who I had dealt with before.
Then I found a pair of correct vintage non-relieved diamond targets, but unfortunately with some dings and a fair sized chunk of grip missing, but not otherwise too worn. Well I had DWFAN do his thing and he created another masterpiece for me. How he can replace missing wood on a pair of grips and you can't even tell where it was missing is beyond me.
Here's the completed picture. Of course it can't show the interior work I did to clean out the gunk and smooth up a few area's.

DW's Stock Restoration...
Yes, he's a pal of mine, but even if he weren't I'd still call his work nothing short of miraculous...

That looks great. I have a 1952 Target Masterpiece that I bought many years ago in a pawn shop. It was wearing Pachmayrs when I bought it and I eventually bought the correct grips that is unfortunately missing a small chunk up at the top on one side.
I should have my grips restored as you did. Looks great!!!

Very nice indeed,
I am a huge fan of the early non relieved diamond targets.
Mine are on my list of things to do as they have some dents where the extractor jammed rounds into them (Hence the relief cuts later).
One very good way of fixing dents in wood stocks is to apply a wet rag to the site then touch it with a soldering iron.
The steam expands the cells in the wood and swells them back out erasing the dings.

Fantastic! A work of art. That's a Classic that I can get excited about. Do you have plans for the T-grip? Not that I'm interested, but I'm sure you know they're currently worth a mint.

Very nice. I really have a love for the K38. My Dad, a former Marine, and member of the USMC shooting team from 1946-1956, used to let me shoot his when I was a kid around 1953 or 1954. He sold it when he retired. I don't have the gun but I do have his gold medals. Again, very nice. I have three and this one is my favorite. Shipped 8-16-1948 to a hardware store in Sacramento, CA. Not a Gold Box Gun, but still pretty early...
14-1.
Co-incidentally, in this photo it wears a pair of Rosewood Diamond Targets that recieved DW's tender attentions...
Here with it's pair of matching numbered, Magnas and box.
Here's another pair of Rosewood Diamond Target that DW did for me some time ago...
The man does fine work....

Looks very original, to me ! Personally I prefer magna stocks, but Paul
did a nice job on those targets.

According to Mr. Carroll, the guns with target grips were shipped in a blue or purple box. I am looking for one as I have a very mint 1956 K38 4 screw with three "T"s. Unrelieved diamond center targets. One of the prettiest K38's I have ever seen. Sent for a letter couple weeks back and I have my fingers crossed that it comes back 3 "T's" from the factory. The box is incorrect, but it came with the gun. Now, for a nice 5 screw K38. Big Larry
