Sorry if this is a beginner's question. I read people discussing endshake. Can someone explain this to me?

Endshake develops from firing many many rounds over a loing period of time or firing too many hot loads. Either one may develop movement fore and aft on the cylinder or "endshake". It is measured with the cylinder closed, push the cylinder all the way forward and measure the gap between it and the forcing cone, then pull the cylinder all the way back and measure this gap, the difference is "endshake".
Even brand new guns have a very slight bit of endshake. HTH

There are available very thin hardened steel "washers" that can be used to adjust that clearance. Been decades, but I think I got mine from Brownell's. I'm sure others sell them as well.

What is the standard gap for an N frame when it left the factory or what is a safe operating tolerance?

I've heard .003"-.006" but others will probably know more

I believe that's about right and I've also heard that an additional .006" - .008" endshake was the limit for correction. Others will chime in here.

you can hear the end shake, but you have to shake it REAL hard for a long time There was a time when we used to do that to the old surplus Colts, The always sounded like a bag of glass. but shot great

I bought my shims direct from Grandmasters LLC, FKA Power Custom. They make yoke bearings and cylinder bearings. You have to determine where the play is coming from, probably both. You might do better getting them from another vendor though, as PC's S&H is a killer!

I'm pretty sure Brownell's has them.
