I have both a 22/32 and a Perfected SS in mint/new condition, each made around 1916. Grips have the gold medallions but they are quite dark and detract from the overall looks.

Medallions are not corroded or anything. I would be afraid to use polish with rubbing, as I am pretty sure it would result in the same sort of 'un-natural' look you get when you polish a coin. I was wondering if anyone had tried chemically brightening tarnished medallions with any success?

Wish I had a set of junker grips with those medallions to practice on.

I have used Flitz with good success. I apply a small amount with my finger and gently rub in a circular motion, cleaning with a dry soft cloth. It really brightens them up.

You can also use a pencil eraser to remove dirt and tarnish without damaging the medallions.

I've used SemiChrome with Q-tips. Careful use of Q-tips can keep polish off the wood.

I appreciate the tips, but still am leery of using polish for the reason originally stated. I know there are chemicals used, for example, to "dip" silver in and they brighten the metal substantially without rubbing--just contact with the solution performs the brightening.

I don't know if the medallions are brass, plated with something to give the golden hue, or are brass all the way through and the alloy chosen to give the gold hue.
