Heads up "Rare" S&W at Live Oak, TX gun show
Guy has a "Rare" English marked Victory model converted to .38 Special and with barrel cut so short it lost the front lug for only $550. Some of you collectors rush down there and snap it up so I won't be tempted :-0.

It makes me sad to see these butchered pistols and it makes me mad to see unscrupulous sellers trying to pass them off on unknowing buyers.

Caveat Emptor . . .
P. T. Barnum was, unfortunately, correct in his assessment of human nature.
The ones I find either the funniest or the saddest are the Gun Broker ads where a few try to sell "rare!" mis-marked S&W's (such as a current 28-2 marked '29-2') for 500-1000% mark-up. As Mr. T would have said, I pity the fool that buys that thinking he's gonna cash in big-time some day . . . . . .

Just back from the gun show in Fishersville, Va, where surprisingly almost everything was priced about right-- including a very nice commercial 1917 with about 90% finish and crisp grips with a sub-$1500 price tag... sometimes I guess it pays to shop locally.

Unfortunately, this is all to common, a few weeks back at one of the local trading spots, an excited fellow came bye and showed me his new prize he had just purchased, seller told him it was a M/P made during WW2, said the guy told him you could tell bye the C in front of serial #,
I hated to break it to him that his M/P was post war and explained about the Four line Marcus Registrados being post war and the C was started in 48, but worst of all was the Double bulged barrel, i could see the disapointment in his face as he headed off in the direction he had come, im sure looking for the seller, i didnt want to be the one to break it to him, but it might save him from buying a safe full of these treasures.

I got a really nice pre war 5" .38 M&P in there a few months ago for under $200. It was about as good of a copy as I've seen recently. Just never know what's going to show up when.

I saw that revolver, I just smiled and kept on walking. I gave up trying to educate vendors/dealer after I told the man running the gun library at cabellas that the .38 special revolver in the case was really a .38 S&W. He said he would get right on it and change the tag, three weeks later it was still there and still a 38 special. I believe that most mismarked pistols are marked the way they are is ignorance. I have have bought some really valuable pistols that were mismarked. An example is the two Registered Magnums I've bought because the dealers thought were M-28 or M-27s. One in a pawn shop and one at a very big and respected gun shop.

I also have given up educating most vendors myself but I couldn't help letting out a little laugh as I walked by that one. Funny about your Registered Mags, I joined this Forum because of a "M-27" that the sights didn't look right to me and I needed some educating. Turned out to be a Non-Registered Mississippi Highway Patrol.
