Post-War Transition 38-44 Outdoorsman Gun Show Find
Yesterday I went to my local show that usually turns up nothing. I had not been there 5 minutes when I saw this Outdoorsman sitting on a dealers table. I picked it up and he told me it was from 1950-1955. I have finally learned when to keep my mouth shut. After talking him down a bit on the price,I left with my first Transition gun. I took the grips off when I got home and was suprised to see they are numbered to the gun. SN is S-70691. I think it is a 1947 gun. I guess my local show is not so bad after all.

Sure makes you feel good when you leave a show with something like that when you were not expecting it. Nice find.
It sometimes amazes me how much some dealers think they know.

Jim-I picked up a long tube 27-2 at the show yesterday too. I didn't see that one. Good score.

Beautiful Outdoorsman! Don't know what you paid for it, but to give you a point of reference I took a pass on a very similar transition at $1000 and have had severe regrets ever since. They a not easy to come by and you have found a nice one--congratulations . Regards, Bart

Jim,
Great looking gun! They are hard to find with the original grips and that is a big plus! I'm sure you will enjoy it very much!

Hi Jim,
What was that,............you managed to talk him down a bit?
And then,....................you got it for $580?
Why does it not surprise me? It doesn't surprise me because I've seen you in action. I seem to remember a 6 1/2" H.D. you acquired at the Denver Show in similar circumstances in 2010.
Congratulations; a great buy. I have S70364 that shipped Nov. 1946.
Best Wishes,
Frank S. SWCA 2052.

Just one of the truths of life. Every gun show won't turn up a bargain like this. If only one every few years does, they're worth going to. It teaches you to bring along a pocket full of cash, and walk the entire show with an open mind. If you go to a show looking for one specific gun, you probably won't find it. But you've got to take what the "gun Gods" send your way.

Which brings us up to the joke. Read it and believe.
There was this business man, Saul. He had a beautiful wife, a beautiful home, and a very profitable business. But after years of success, his fortunes began to change. So he went to church and prayed (OK, A guy named Saul would probably not be Christian, but the story flows well). He needed some quick cash, so he prayed for a lottery win. But no such luck. Soon his wife decided to leave him. So we went back to church and prayed some more, wanting a large sum of cash to lure a new hottie. But no such luck.
And then his business started to go sour. Deals fell through, inventory went bad, key employees quit. So he went back to church and prayed even more, wanting a big score on the lottery to bail out his company. No such luck. Then one day a storm came through and dropped a tree in his pool and another on his roof. Just destroying the home.
So in distress he went back to church and prayed even more. Suddenly the roof flew the church and a huge hand came down and pointed at poor humble Saul. So he was in tears and crying said, why God why. And God said, Saul, you fool, if you want to win the lottery you've got to buy at least one ticket!
Which brings us back to this thread. If you want to win the 38/44 lottery, you've got to go to gun shows. Can't find a gem sitting in your living room. Well, if you're GLL or Aspenhill, you might score big in your gun room! Me, I sold my last one. Now I can only find RMs, K22s, 44s, etc. Makes me happy. But I go to every gun show I can find. In the past, God has looked out for me very well.
