Default Clam Shell Box Question

If they made the clam shell box from say 1961 to 69 why is is that you rarely see them. I find alot of 29s with 70s cases but never see them in those clam shell cases. you would think you would see them more often since they were made for about 10 years. I see the dark blue 44 mag boxes more than the clam shells. Your thoughts

Curtis:
I just went to Bill's commentary and he does indeed state they were used until early 69, like sb states.
If you look at the string of N frame serial numbers between the early 60s until the S prefix ran out, it doesn't appear that many were made.

The Styrofoam top and bottom liners were chewed up by the rear and front sights as well as the accessories if the revolver was stored in the case. I have found a quite a few clamshell cases that were in really bad shape. I suppose a lot of them were thrown away because of this problem.

They are fragile--this 8-3/8 from 1960 survived pretty good.

Default Another question about clam shells

I have restored many clam shell cases for collectors and I have a couple in my collection but I have never seen a 4" clam shell case! Does anyone here have a 4" clam shell? I would like to see a picture if possible?

Very nice cases! Mine looks alot like the one that is getting the winter referb. It is from a 1964 M29. It took 47 years for it to look like that and I dont have the heart to get it fixed. Thanks for the info.

The speculation on the above 1971 shipped long barreled
29-2 is that because this was not a popular barrel length/finish combination by the late 60s this gun probably sat in the factory vault until it finally sold in Dec, 1971, well after the date many N series 29-2s had shipped.

Default Who has good eyes?

Thanks for the pics of the 4" cases, now I know for sure! Here is a picture a customer sent me of two cases he wants restored! He tried to "describe" the cases to me but I couldn't figure out what he had. It seems he has a clam shell with the gun pointing to the right, OR DOES HE! ? ! ?

Joe, the case on the left is upside down. This is a common mistake.

Default OOPS

Hey Chuck
Did you need to post that for EVERYONE to see? Now I won't be able to buy those "incorrect clam shells" for $10.00 anymore! Come to think of it, I was never able to buy any clam shell for $10.00!

For those that are unable to see how Chuck & Sal knew the case on the left is upside down, the finger reliefs around the tools belong on the bottom!
