Very nice gun. If those grips are KB's they could have been added later in the guns life. Larry

I was thinking "Holy Cow!" but "Damn!" will certainly do. That is really something. Beautiful sixgun you have there.
Just as a matter of curiosity, does the engraving appear to be cut for magnas? Not trying to take a thing away from your combination, but I always find it interesting how engravers "work around" the stocks.
Again, that thing is a true work of art. Congratulations.

hi nice 44
I have one engraved by Neil Hartliep it is a pre model 24 with a 5 inch barrel. shipped in 1955. The picture I have of it is not very good. when I get a chance I will get some better pictures.
I have only seen about 6 S&W engraved by Mr. Hartliep. Most of his engraving was done on High Quality Shot Guns.
I was able to meet his Brother a few years back and learn some information about Neil, his brother was also a Engraver he lived in Idaho.
Hope is information helps.

Wow. That is very nice.
But I bet it letters as a 6.5" gun. I have a cut down 1950 and yours has the same look.

I would side with the guys saying the stocks were added later, perhaps when the engraving was done. I also think the barrel was cut down because of the markings being off center.
None of that takes away from overall quality or appearance of the gun. For those liking showy guns that is indeed a dandy!

Charlie,
Great gun! Glad you got it. I too have a Neil Hartliep engraved gun. As Jim mentioned, Neil mainly engraved rifles and shotguns and not pistols by themselves. If he was doing a long gun for you he would do a pistol also.

Thanks for all the replies. I removed the grips and found out that the engraving does extend under the target stocks and would be perfect for Diamond Magnas. The grips are definately Keith Brown. I was only joking about Keith putting them on in 53. I appreciate all the input about engraver, Neil Hartliep. After a google search, there are a few hits ,but not too many. I`m glad to see that some of you have some of his work.

Charlie,
Neil authored the NRA's manual on engraving. You can find one on Ebay if you watch closely!

I just opened the factory letter from Roy and was pleasently surprised. My newly aquired 4" was shipped that way in January 27, 1955 To H.H. Harris Co. in Chicago. After a hard day of roofing, That letter made my day. Thanks Roy

I rather thought that was an original barrel, but I wasn't going to say anything with far smarter guys saying it might be cut. I've noticed the short-barrel N-Frames have the barrel stampings all the way back to the edge of the curve where the tapered barrel curves from the frame down to it's thinner diameter. Seems like a barrel has to be about 4-5" or longer for this not to be the case.
BEAUTIFUL pistol!

I really can't add anything that hasn't already been expressed, but that is an impressive engraving. I certainly like the style and combined with the model, caliber and barrel length it adds up to one very desireable handgun. I know you're going to enjoy being that great gun's caregiver for a spell.

Welcome to the forum. Would you care to elaborate on your relationship with Neil? Your father perhaps? If so I know we would all enjoy hearing any stories you might have, along with any pictures you would like to share.
