Default Help with a Heavy Duty bbl question.

Can somebody please tell me if a post war HD with a 6 1/2 inch barrel has patent markings on top of the barrel just like a pre war HD with a 6 1/2? I feel almost too embarrassed to ask, but I couldn't find the answer in SCSW or in the Neal and Jinks book. There's not too much discussion here on the Forum for that bbl length. For some reason I have thought that only pre war guns had the patent markings on the top of the barrel. I know that the 4 inchers had no such markings (I suppose for lack of room) but I want to know specifically about the six and a half.

Thanks much.

Roger

Roger,

My 6.5" Washington State Patrol HD from 1956 has no markings on top of the barrel. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Jerry

I'll confess right off, I don't know for sure. I do know that other models, transitionals have been observed with patent dates and I have a few but not a HD. Is that a confirmed ship date or from the book.
Does it have any other pre war characteristics; one line address, grips, thumblatch, etc.?

Thank you and that confirms my thoughts. I sure do love the longer barrels for some reason. Of course I've never carried one. That would probably change my mind.

Roger,
Both 5 and 6.5 inch barrels had patent/address markings on them. I know that S72185 did not have the markings, so they were discontinued sometime before then. S68103 still had them. Most of the 6.5 Transition guns were early in production.
I hope this helps,
Bill

I can also add that Transitional HD, S67625 has patent markings on top of the 5 inch barrel.

OK, that helps a lot. The reason I was asking is that I have one on the way that is Pre War with a 6.5 bbl and patent markings. Small logo, one line address of course. I took a chance because there is no serial number in the barrel. My fear was that it may have had a post war barrel but I figured if it had the patent info on top it had to be Pre War. It was one of those things that I just personally liked the gun and will still be happy no matter what. Of course I will letter it when I get it but would dearly love to find out if that it shipped that way. I'm heading to the beach tomorrow for a week so I won't get it until about a week and a half. I'll update with pics then.

Thanks. Roger

PS..from memory I think the serial is 48xxx

In 1976, I had a M27 converted to a 6 1/2" .44 Special. I carried it as a duty weapon in a high ride, butt forward thumbbreak M29 Safariland holster. I had no problems in a patrol car nor did I consider it too slow on the draw either. I carried it for about four years.
