Default Grandfather gave me a revolver, and I need a holster

Hello folks. Clearly a first-time poster with a specific need, but I plan to read up more, too.

However, might as well get my question out there.

My grandfather gave me what he said was his old revolver. Original box, grips, the rest.

From what I can tell, it's a S&W Military & Police .38 Special, 6" barrel, SN C103108. As far as I can tell, it's from the 1940s.

The bluing is messed up, so it's a shooter, and he said to use it as such.

With that in mind, I'd like to find a belt holster for it. I know I could get a nylon Uncle Mike's down the road without a sweat, but I feel a little sentimental about it, and would like a leather holster.

I'm not sure how to go about finding one for a gun this old. It seems like .38s with 6" barrels aren't in hot demand!

Where do you guys go to holster such old weapons? A website, a company, a brand, what have you. I'll take whatever's thrown at me.

Much appreciated, folks! Thanks!

Oh wow! Will do!

Looks like that Jaguar holster works pretty well. I don't see any others, but finding one is much better than zero.

Default I like the

smith & wesson 21-36. You should be able to find one on ebay for 20 bucks or less. If you google "smith and wesson 21-36 holster" you will probably find a few for sale somewhere out there in cyberspace.

I was told it was an old baughman brother design that smith and wesson produced for several years when they were into holster making. I find the design ideal. I crawl around in brush quite a bit and I particularly like that the safety strap holds the hammer down.

Any holster made for a 6" K-frame S&W revolver should work for you.

You might try any pawnshop or gunshop that deals in used guns. Most of the time, they have a barrel of old used holsters for cheap, and sometimes you can find a pretty nice one that would match the vintage of your M&P.

Default Holster

Welcome to this great site. You will have fun here and learn a lot.

I would second the excellent mikepriwer suggestion to order an heirloom holster for an heirloom gun. Yes, used holsters are out there and good to have, They range from knock-about quite superb.

But this seems a different case, if I understand the original post.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Regards,

Dyson

Gunshows--if any in your area--are a good source for used leather holsters at (usually) reasonable prices.

Whew! The floodgates opened. Thank you for all the suggestions!

The case with this revolver is a little confusing, to be frank. The weapon is an heirloom, one my grandfather did not care much for (he preferred the same weapon in .32-20), so I think that's why he gave it to me, as he knew I enjoy firearms.

However, I'm not sure where it fits in my "arsenal." I'm building a Glock battery right now (26 first, then a 19) and I didn't expect to suddenly have a revolver in my hands. That's why I asked about holsters; I don't know how far down the bank account I want to get into this surprise.

Then again, I've already picked up some speedloaders for it and have my eye on pouches for them. Go figure.

Thank you again for all your help; it's much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum. You're on the right track, you don't want to put that fine old revolver in a nylon holster, it deserves some leather. As someone else mentioned, check eBay, there are usually a few leather K frame holsters there that can be had for a reasonable price. Also, check the classifieds here and you might find something that would work.

We like to see pictures. Also, don't put that Smith near the Glocks, so their "ugliness" cannot rub off onto the Smith.

Howdy

I have been using Hunter brand holsters since I was a kid. They make a nice, serviceable holster. I prefer the 1100 series. They make one to fit just about every gun ever made. There is a chart on their web page showing what models fit which guns. Lots of gun shops stock the Hunter brand. And you can usually find plenty of these holsters in the used holster barrel too. I actually prefer to find the old ones. All the smelly oil has dried out and they are no longer oily to the touch. They usually only cost around $10 when you find them used. I like the 1100 series because the snap strap keeps the gun secure. A vintage gun looks fine in them.

Hunter Holsters - The Hunter Company

I just did a quick search over at Midway USA and they have one for a six inch Model 10, which will fit your M&P.

Wow, you guys really are generous. I never got this much help on other gun forums! Then again, there are quite a lot of you. Heh.

Pictures were called for, and I must deliver. Warning: They're a little big.

You can see now what he meant by it being a shooter. He left the gun in its original box, but I think something must have leaked inside of said box. I keep it in my bedside safe.

Flawless on this side, though.

Unfortunately there aren't many gun stores in this area, and I went through their bargain bins. Hunter's a nice option, but my eye keeps swinging toward that old 21-36 as a stopgap, until I can build the cash for something like, say, one from Lefty or that Eagle character. Heh.

Also, thank you kindly Paul, for letting me know about the manufacture timeframe! He said he bought it in the 40s, so 1948 and 1949 makes sense. He was back from the war by then.

Take it out and shoot it along side your Glocks. You'll find it has a comforting feel in comparison. Sure the G holds more ammo, but there's a reason the 6 shot, .38 Special K frame was in use for as many years as it was. It did the job then, and still will.

I'm not saying you should CC it instead of one of your Glocks, I'm just saying take it out and shoot it, and enjoy it as a family heirloom and a piece of gun history. And know that if you ever had to use it for serious business, you'd be far from unarmed.

Of this, I'm sure.

I'm actually glad to have it as my home defense weapon. It protected my grandfather for decades. It can protect my family just as well.

I have had true custom holsters made from both of these Gent's and the holsters are excellent for 50-80 bucks.

Another source for old leather would be police supply places. Sometimes when upgunning holsters went with thee gun in trade. Usually at least a bit tired but check the stitching & general condition. Usually a pretty economical deal.

I have a thing about pairing a nice vintage Smith with a holster of similar vintage.

This is an M17 riding in a Lawrence 25LB holster. It’s just makes sense.

Another place you might take a look for a holster is The Simply Rugged Holster company makes their Sourdough model for medium to large revolvers, and they can easily accomodate your six inch barrel. These are well made, very comfortable OWB holsters of the type you need to carry this revolver. My dealings with this holster maker have been very satisfatory. You can get a plain one or a fancy one, depending on your tastes, but this holster will carry your revolver easily and give it good protection. It has the benefit of allowing the revolver to be carried strong side or crossdraw. They have other offerings as well, which you can see on their website. My wait time for any holster I have ordered from them has been less than four weeks, and their prices are very good for the quality of holster you get from them.
