grip and gun one number off
I recently entered a thread about my pre model 15 that every number matched. Well not quite. I pulled the grips and looked again, and the grip number is one higher than the gun. I never looked that close before. This is a most interesting thing to me. The pistol looks like it was kept in a safe place and seldom fired as the chambers and bbl are pristeen.Any comments about this situation ?

Is it a police or military model where many in a numerical series may have been armoror serviced? If so, stocks could have been intermingled with it's bretheran.
If it is a cilvilian model, I would bet it came that way from S&W.

Assembled on a Friday afternoon when the assembly man had his mind on Miller time.

What the others said. Shouldn't have any effect on collectability or value.

My "Pre-27" is sort of like that. The number on the stocks is exactly 1,000 more than the gun. The fit is perfect, so it's no big deal to me.

I've had a gun like that.
Just figured the person installing the grips either had a senior moment, couldn't find the right # or the grips were mis-marked.
In the last scenario, the stamper person notified the assembly person of the exception without the boss finding out, so nobody got into trouble.
As long as they fit, it's no biggie.
