1957 no dash Model 28 4 screw
I have an opportunity to acquire a 4" Highway Patrolman. Question: How many years did they make the four screw? I'm at work and don't have my book; I recall that in general 4 screws are rarer than 5 screws, but don't always realize a premium. Or is it that the model marked guns vs. Pre- guns eclipses the number of screws?
Guy is asking $650, but 'has some room'. It has box, papers, tools and numbered original Magnas. What do you guys think?

The 4 screw guns were made about 1 1/2-2 years and there is roughly the same number of model marked and non model marked guns. $650 depending on condition aint bad, but if there's room it's even better.

I have a 4 screw 28 in 6" and at this time don't believe I'd let it go for that. Like the man said, not bad, but especially if there's some wiggle room . . . .

He also has a 1962 6" M27 that he wants $1200 for, but I can't swing that right now.

To me the HP is a little high and the 27 is way high.
But that's me. You want 'em then buy 'em.

I would think the 4 screw HP was made for longer than 1.5-2 years. More like 5-6.

You are correct sir!! Four screw guns were made before model numbers and for several years thereafter. They are NOT extremely rare but well worth collecting in high condition. The engineering change to eliminate the trigger guard screw was 1961 according to SCSW.

Any idea of condition? I assume it's pretty darn nice for him to ask that price.

It was the five screw guns that were made the shortest length of time - mid '54 to around the end of '56 or so, if memory serves.

He says the 27 'looks to be unfired'. The HP is high 90%s according to his description. I'll see on Sunday . . .

If it looks good the offer I made for mine was $600 OTD:
Poor Tyler fit...
Proper fit of BK grip adapter...
I suckered in since I was suffering from a stint of gottahaveit and he knew it. Original magnas should have diamonds. Need to update this with the new BK grip adapter. I guess some of them came with Target stocks. Here his a thread to great info and pics:
The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

The no dash 28 was made from 1957-1961 IIRC. A while back i sold a LNIB 4" no dash for $800. Since then I sold a similar no dash 28 for $600. Not NIB, but to say it was 95 percent would probably be low grading it.
When it comes to collectible guns those last few percentage points on condition make a big difference in what the gun will bring.

5-screw HPs were made from their introduction in late 1954 until mid-57 (less than three years). 4-screw HPs probably began to be shipped in early 1957 and were shipped through 1961 (nearly 5 years).
The rare variation is a non-model marked HP with a 4-screw frame. This variation was made from early 57 to early 58 or so.

The seller wants to much for both reolvers as a 90% 4 screw Model 28 in my mine is worth around $550 and the Model is the most common barrel size is worth like $800 tops in the condition you discribe.

Yes, I think he's high on the 27, but that the 28 is in the ballpark if it truly is high 90s condition (plus box papers, etc. and original numbered diamond magnas)

Pleased with HP - got it for 6 bills. Serial No. 183,5XX is late 1958-early 1959 according to book; trying to track down source of 1957 date I was given. M27 was everything they said, but I still think 1200 is too much.

I paid $550 shipped for an HP (pre 28) 11 years ago, so I don't think that $600 today is out of line. Mine is a 5 screw serial number S 1291XX that shipped in 4 of 1955. Since the HP was introduced on April 15, 1954, mine is either a late first year gun or an early 2nd year gun.
It is also interesting to note that your gun is model marked, however, the box is not. Just goes to show that S&W did not throw anything away and obviously used up all of their HP boxes before they began shipping in boxes marked Model 28. Mine resides in a non marked box serialed to a gun produced somewhat later with an S 147XXX serial number written on the bottom. The box has no exterior markings but has a printed white label on one end.

5 screw Mod 28
I lucked up last week when a friend of mine that runs a shop in his back yard called me and told me he had a mod 28 in 95% condition.I told him I would take it. I was shocked when I went to get it. I did the paper work and could not waite to get it home. It was a 5 screw S frame. As soon as I got home I called S&W customer service . They looked up the serial number101xxx and told me it was made in 1954.would you believe i got this one for $350
